We’ve triumphed in the design competition for the new Museum of Islamic Art Australia. Described it as “a big audacious project” by Islamic Science and Research Academy director Professor Mehmet Ozalp, the first arts museum of its kind in Sydney will be a place for Australians to deepen our understanding of Islam through educational and artistic programs, tours and excursions.

Katherine Rickard has taken the helm at ARM Architecture’s Queensland studio, and the timing couldn’t be better. With the state firmly in the spotlight and a strong pipeline of complex, high-profile projects underway, Katherine is a leader who gets complex projects moving. With sharp design instincts, deep local roots, and hard-won insight from her time at Gold Coast City Council to keep ARM’s bold vision moving forward.

Katherine’s hit the ground running – leading the Gold Coast Civic and Music Hall, a $40m transformation of the former Surfers Paradise Transit Centre into a 3,000-capacity live music and community hub. Meanwhile, principal Aaron Poupard continues to drive new and existing work across all Queensland sectors, with concept design for the Lyric Theatre – the next chapter in the ARM-masterplanned HOTA precinct – freshly completed. Queensland is really having its moment in the sun. ARM is glad to be here to enjoy it.

After 27 years atop a city car park, national architecture, interiors and urban design firm ARM has moved its Melbourne cool to a swish and contemporary studio in a central city tower.

Amid the disco-infused joy of The Huxleys, the studio was launched last week by Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Margaret Gardner AC, Governor of Victoria , with a speech that would make us blush if we were bashful.

Launching the new studio is to celebrate four decades of contribution to Australia’s architectural, civic and cultural life. A creative, research-led approach has been foundational to ARM’s practice whose questioning spirit has produced a national body of work that is unmistakable, influential, and widely recognised.

Who’s got the most winning ideas at RMIT architecture? ARM’s prize is awarded annually for design projects that are intellectually ambitious, iconoclastic, and reflect contemporary practice.

This year’s judges were Ian McDougall, Neil Masterton and Lucy Carruthers. Big thanks to the RMIT staff who brought the projects forward and engaged with us during the judging, and congratulations to the minds behind the projects.

This year the award is split between 2 projects:

Salt, Saliva, S***m & Sweat – studio led by Michael Spooner (image 1)
Ephemeral Geologies – studio led by Alan Kim (image 2)

Our very own Nadia Po**en was honoured with an RMIT Masters Award for Design Excellence (image 3)

A world-class win.

Munurra Centre for Regional Excellence has WON the Completed Buildings – Higher Education and Research award at the World Architecture Festival. It’s a big joy moment! We’re affirmed by this recognitition, and proud of the proper job Munarra does supporting prosperity, cultural pride and educational outcomes for the Yorta Yorta community, who are the real winners.

Our ecstatic team thanks the project clients and collaborators. Munarra is back on the WAF stage today, with the World Building of the Year prize to be announced at the Gala Dinner tonight (Miami time).

ARM Director Mark Raggatt is an excellent architect, editor, teacher, curator and critic whose work has earnt him a broad and erudite knowledge in the disciplines of architecture and urban design. He works best where trust paves opportunity for conversation in fun and rewarding ways. And now, he’s a Fellow of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects, in honour of outstanding contributions to the profession beyond architectural practice. We couldn’t be gladder for him.

Mark’s contribution to cultural discussion and advancing architectural practice is provocative, generous, and essential. Essential, yes - especially to all of us at ARM, and all the beneficiaries of his professional engagement: the RMIT Architecture Industry Advisory Committee, NSWGA Design Excellence juries, volunteering on the Sydney Diocese Anglican Design Panel, AIA juries and the NSW Editorial Committee, design research and teaching at RMIT University and the University of Technology Sydney, and regular contributions to journals and forums in Australia and abroad.

WINNER! The Blacktown Exercise and Sports Technology Hub (BEST) by ARM Architecture has won the top award in the Commercial Interior – Public and Hospitality category in the 2024 Dulux Colour Awards.

Six projects were presented with awards and ten with commendations from a pool of 83 finalists. Winners and commendation recipients were announced at an awards ceremony at the Sydney Opera House on 29 May.

We're excited to be taking part in again this year. Learning Ecologies: Designing for Education will take participants on a tour of the recently completed North Melbourne Primary School Molesworth Street Campus, followed by a panel discussion with ARM designers Jesse Judd and Andrea Wilson, landscape architect Sarah Hicks and learning environment researcher Dr Scott Alterator .
