Designing for senior living means understanding more than buildings.

Our Seniors Living team understands how ageing, dementia and care are closely linked with the built environment. That understanding comes from specialist training undertaken by team members with Dementia Australia and hands on experience with the realities faced by residents, families and care teams.

We’ve strengthened this capability further through early access assessment audits, allowing our teams to identify risks, ask better questions, and design with greater confidence from the outset.

This reflects the outcome of our white paper Designing the Future of Senior Living and how design can support dignity, independence and wellbeing over time.

Giving kids their best start, these three new regional Early Learning Centres complement existing school sites and support local communities.

The centres are designed around a series of architectural principles which reflect their function. The forms are designed with simplicity of design and construction using a series of modular elements.

Key facade elements are accentuated through scale and material composition to create an architecture in the round. These elements highlight key entries and create a sense of hierarchy in the built forms.

Materials and colours reflect the regional context drawing upon natural landscape elements and the muted colour palette of the Victorian Riverina and Goldfields regions. These help to embed the centres and create a strong connection to place.

Senior living shouldn’t feel institutional, it should feel like home.

We still see environments shaped by compliance and efficiency than by the everyday experience of the people who live and work there.

The new Aged Care Act and National Design Guidelines have shifted this thinking, and has lead to Four Design Principles that center on the experience of the individual, not the provider. This starts with enabling the person, cultivating a true sense of home, ensure real access to nature and connecting people back to the community.

Success looks different when you design this way. Homes feel familiar and nature becomes integral to everyday life. Community connection is genuine and not symbolic.

When we start with people rather than systems, better design outcomes are achieved.

This National Reconciliation Week 27 May – 3 June, the theme All In is a call for all Australians to commit to reconciliation wholeheartedly, not just during a week but every day.
At Gray Puksand, reconciliation is an ongoing commitment to listening, learning and strengthening relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, embedded across our practice.

To mark Reconciliation Week, we’re taking time to reflect, learn and connect through Cultural Appreciation training, the installation of our artwork Galyna Woka (Beautiful Land – Yorta Yorta) by KINYA LERRK across our studios, the celebration of First Nations music artists, and participation in local Reconciliation Week events.

Senior Living Whitepaper: Design Matters Now More Than Ever

In the wake of the Royal Commission, the new Aged Care Act and National Design Guidelines have fundamentally shifted expectations for aged care environments to a human-centric approach.

We are moving from compliance driven, provider-centric care to rights and outcome driven models where the built environment actively enables autonomy, wellness, dignity and connection.

Design is no longer a backdrop, but a core mechanism for delivering seniors’ rights and standards.

The message is clear that environments must support how people live, not just how services are delivered.

108 Wickham Street has undergone a strategic repositioning to a contemporary office space within Brisbane’s CBD-fringe.

Engaged by the client CapitaLand, Gray Puksand’s brief was to strengthen the property as a competitive commercial asset through design – to enhance functionality, experience, and leasing appeal. The project is a prime example of sustainable adaptive reuse, retaining as much as possible of the existing built form while introducing a material and spatial strategy to transform it into a commercial space worthy of its A grade location.

The design encompasses the concept of Duality – drawing inspiration from Fortitude Valley’s vibrant mix of heritage, culture, and energy. It celebrates contrasts: the historic and the modern; the intimate and the expansive; the functional and the experiential. This was achieved through adaptable spaces for a multitude of uses – accommodating both professional and social requirements. This dual function is reinforced through a lobby that anchors the building while maintaining a clear visual and spatial connection to its urban context.

Areas that previously operated as transitional space are redefined to support pause, informal gathering and everyday use, strengthening the building’s connection to its surrounding precinct. The workplace environments are configured to support flexibility, allowing the building to respond to a range of tenant needs over time.

Canberra Institute of Technology Woden Campus has received a commendation in the 2026 Learning Environments Australasia Design (LEAD) Awards. We’re honoured to see the project acknowledged as part of a wider conversation about the future of learning environments across Australasia.

The project was recognised in the New Campus with Educational Facilities category, which applies to the construction of a new educational institution on a new campus. The LEAD Awards celebrate excellence in learning environment design, recognizing projects where pedagogy, place, culture and community come together to enable meaningful, inclusive and future focused learning.

At the heart of Woden, the project brings together a major new education campus, a youth foyer and a public transport interchange into a single, connected precinct. Designed in close partnership with Canberra Institute of Technology, Lendlease and Infrastructure Canberra, it supports learning, access and community in a way that reflects the evolving relationship between cities and education.

Last night’s MDW event at Gray Puksand brought warmth, meaningful conversation, and in-depth insights into our topic of Authentic Storytelling in Architecture and the Importance of Indigenous Co-design. The discussion centred around journeys of cultural engagement, design rigour, and translation of narrative through architectural language.

Panellists highlighted the significance that buildings hold, and how they can feel “authentically inhabited” when they carry story and engage honestly with what came before. Ian Khoo touched on design rigour guiding decisions when translating narrative through architectural language. Jeff Gray framed meaningful engagement as “heart,” grounded in the continuity of relationships rather than transactional extraction. Brad Fuller shared the importance of bringing historians/heritage into projects so they can meaningfully influence design, reflect on the site’s history and support authentic storytelling and community engagement. Uncle Dave reinforced the change we need in industry, engagement of cultural knowledge holders early, identifying whose Country we are working on, and locating the right people to speak for that Country.

The Gray Puksand team are delighted to be designing the new home of The AFL - Australian Football League as they relocate to Melbourne Quarter Tower.

The AFL is an organisation built on energy, ritual and community, and as such the workplace must do more than function, it should inspire. Our design responds with a dynamic, wellbeing focused environment: spaces for collaboration and concentration, moments for recovery, and a material palette that reflects the diversity and passion of the AFL brand.

It’s a place that welcomes the wider football community showcasing the game’s stories and creating a front door that feels unmistakably AFL.

We’re enjoying working closely with project partners Lend Lease and their delivery team StudioBE to ensure the new workplace is both high performing and deeply human; designed for the people who power the game.

Heidi Smith, Lead Partner (VIC) is excited to be collaborating with the AFL to bring this vision to life, supporting the AFL team to do their best work and strengthen connection to culture and community.

On Thursday, Gray Puksand will host 'Authentic Storytelling in Architecture: The Importance of Indigenous Co-Design' as part of National Gallery of Victoria Melbourne Design Week.
The conversation will explore how place, history and culture inform the built environment.

The discussion will look at how Indigenous co-design can influence a project well before the outcome is visible, shaping the brief, the relationships behind it and the decisions that follow.

Don’t miss out on valuable insights into forging lasting, respectful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and placing Country and culture at the heart of place-making.
