Most homes are designed from the inside out. This one wasn’t.

For landscape architect Lauren Anderson’s family home in Victoria’s Goulburn Valley, the garden came first. Climate, habitat, heritage and a deep connection to place informed the evolution of this 1940s Art Deco home, shaping not only the landscape but the architecture and interiors as well.

Anchored by a mature River Red Gum, the project blurs the boundary between house and garden, treating them as a single, continuous environment. Deeply attuned to season, weather and place the home embodies a shared commitment to craftsmanship and the strength of collaboration between designer and builder.

We are putting the finishing touches on this terrace garden for an exciting new wellness destination in Prahran.

Designed as a place to slow down and reconnect, the space layers lush patterned planting, natural materials, and the gentle presence of water to create a calm, restorative arrival experience. Every detail has been considered to feel grounded, timeless and quietly luxurious.

More to come soon.

There is power in having a plan. Ideas planted in space and time to be tested, resolved, and given room to grow.

I recently did a Landscape Lookback at my sister-in-law’s garden, a passionate gardener herself, four years on from when we first collaborated. Seeing it in full Autumn glory? Simply stunning.

Outdoor living doesn’t end with summer.

Our gardens are designed for year-round enjoyment. At Avenel the garden features a beautifully crafted custom fireplace that brings warmth, atmosphere, and an inviting space to gather through the cooler seasons.

Something special happens when gardeners gather. We know gardens are never just about plants. They are places of healing, habitat and reconnection for people.

On Wednesday in the , we came together for Gardening After Fires - sharing conversations around rebuilding gardens after fire, resilient planting, propagation, and supporting regeneration in our recovering landscapes and communities.

What stayed with me most was the feeling in the room: new friendships formed, optimism shared, dirty hands carrying plants and nesting boxes home, and minds full of inspiration — including a new love for indigenous native species like the beautiful Arthropodium strictum ‘Chocolate Lily’, which I think you’ll be seeing in my future planting plans.

THANK YOU to everyone who joined us, especially Zara and Fearghus from Kim and Elyse and the team at and Mick who shared a trailer load of plants he had propagated.

This is the kind of public space project we love.
au and have been awarded the Moama Town Entry Enhancement project at the Kerrabee Sound Shell and today we got our boots on the ground for a detailed site visit.

Set in a beautiful riverine environment along the Murray, this is a public realm project for locals and visitors alike - a space with beauty, history and real potential.

We can’t wait to get to work. Watch this space.

Not every plant in your garden needs to shout for attention… but some really do quietly steal the spotlight.

Our Eucalyptus erythrocorys (Red-Capped Gum) at does exactly that. Most of the year it sits effortlessly in the landscape, screening a power pole from view then when it flowers, it becomes the undeniable centrepiece, perfectly complementing the art deco lines of the house and garden.

To keep it in proportion, we prune it back to around 3-4m as part of our ongoing maintenance. Cutting it back by about 1m each year encourages dense, lateral growth rather than height. The result is a tree that stays sculptural, balanced and full of life year-round.

Stillness with intention.

The final stop on our botanical discovery through Japan.

Volume 03:
Zen gardens, moss-covered worlds and towering bamboo forests. Here’s what’s stayed with me.

Kyoto feels like a deep exhale. The gardens are slower, quieter, and more introspective. Our days here were spent moving between gardens that invite pause, reflection and a different way of seeing.

Our itinerary included

• Kennin-ji Temple (Zen Garden)
• Ryoan-ji Temple (Zen Garden)
• Arashiyama Bamboo Grove including Tenryu-ji Temple Gardens, Okochi Sanso Garden and Gioji Temple Moss Garden
• Tofuku-ji Temple (Zen Garden)

Restraint and clarity define each of the Zen gardens. Seeing them in person has given me perspective. There’s no excess, no distraction - just carefully placed stone, raked gravel and space to think. It’s minimal, but not simple. Every element feels deliberate.

Then the moss gardens… soft, immersive and almost otherworldly. A reminder of how powerful subtlety can be when conditions are just right.

And the bamboo grove - rhythmic, vertical, and quietly dramatic. Light, movement and sound all working together to shape the experience.

Throughout the trip as I’ve moved through these landscapes, I’ve been thinking about restraint in design. It’s not just about what we include, but knowing when to stop. We have the ability to distil a client’s brief to its essence… and then having the discipline to hold back. To let fewer, better elements do the work.

In Kyoto, the gardens aren’t asking for attention - they’re offering space. That’s what I’m bringing home with me. Space to slow down, to notice and to feel.
