🔥 JUST LANDED AT TROPICAL LIVING NURSERY 🔥
Absolutely unreal batch of Blue Grass Trees, Xanthorrhoea glauca, straight in from the Aussie bush and these things are PURE character. Ancient, tough as nails and one of the most iconic statement trees Australia has ever produced.
People call them “Blackboys” back in the day, but the correct name is Blue Grass Tree, Xanthorrhoea glauca. Native to Australia and deeply connected to Aboriginal culture for thousands and thousands of years. Indigenous Australians traditionally used the flower spikes for spear shafts, the resin as a powerful glue and sealant, and even used the dry flower stems for fire making. These trees aren’t just plants, they’re living pieces of Australian history.
Now here’s the wild part… these beauties grow SLOW. Like seriously slow. Most only put on around 1–2cm of trunk growth per year depending on conditions. That means some of the trees sitting here right now are estimated anywhere from around 50 years old right through to close to 100 years old. Think about that for a second. Some of these trees were already alive before half the houses around here even existed. Absolute prehistoric savage units.
And this is exactly why people lose their minds over them in landscaping. You cannot fake age and character like this. Thick black trunks, insane textured bark, that explosion of blue-grey foliage on top, they instantly make a garden look established, high end and uniquely Australian. Stick one near a pool, in a dry garden, coastal setup, modern landscape or feature entrance and BOOM… instant statement piece.
The best thing about Xanthorrhoea glauca? They are unbelievably hardy once established. Full sun legends, drought tolerant, frost tolerant, wind tolerant and built for harsh Australian conditions. These are not soft greenhouse princess plants. These things have survived bushfires, droughts and brutal Aussie summers for decades.
CARE TIPS 👇
☀️ Full sun is best.
💧 Excellent drainage is EVERYTHING.
🪨 They absolutely love rocky free draining soil.
🚫 Don’t bury the trunk.
💦 Water in well initially, then don’t overlove them.
🌱 Low phosphorus native fertiliser only if needed.
Honestly, every single one has its own personality. Bent trunks, chunky trunks, massive skirts, old battle scars from the bush… no two are the same.
These are the kind of trees people stop and stare at when they walk into a property. They bring that raw Australian outback energy that you just cannot buy in fast growing plants.
