Using bean straw mulch has many benefits, we know of the benefits of mulch such as covering the soil, feeding it, keeping weeds suppressed, soil warm, soil biota etc. The nodules on the roots of this bean plant are called nitrogen fixing nodules, they help with converting atmospheric nitrogen into a form that is useful for the plant through a symbiotic relationship between the plant and nitrogen fixing bacteria.

I just stumbled across this photo. This was part of my food forest: Cassava, Choko, Luffa, Yam, Pumpkin, Tomato, turmeric, mulberry, Madagascar bean and dragon fruit in this area. The yam trellis was rock solid after it was lashed together with paracord. It did feed me for a long time. 42 pumpkins that year and cassava chips - oh my….yummo. So yes food in the subtropics was a little different.
