This year the dahlias have very little flowers, we are not sure why. Whether it is from storm damage last year or just not a good year, but we are finally seeing some flowers, but very few.

We have had a busy weekend with not much sleep, and I have been so fortunate to have a day off today, I am dedicating it to a slow day, piano music, hot bath and a small wonder in the garden to collect these flowers in the garden space.

I really enjoy giving flowers away but this year won’t be able to unless there is a miracle in the garden. But for today I will enjoy a small amount of quiet and tranquility that everyone deserves once in a while.

Our dahlias are struggling this year, very late to bloom , there is still hope. But the peach tree which stand at less than a mitre tall has produced some amazing results this year.

As I battle another virus courtesy of all the kids that present with all sorts of goodies this year, I am getting onto the ginger and honey today.

Well the tubers are planted, i am exhausted. But they are done, growers are so fussy storing them and I do store them over winter, but last year I had a few that I left in a plastic bag in the hot house. Well they are fine and have started to grow in a plastic bag. Go figure. Just goes to show you they are hardier than you think. Here’s to an abundance of gorgeous flowers to share with you.

Well we are back home after six weeks away overseas, we are glad to be home, yesterday I started the process of planting the dahlia tubers in the garden. Our business is not going ahead now , as we don’t enjoy it as a business, but we do enjoy giving people joy with our flowers. We still would love to call our garden bonnycroft. So once I finish planting the dahlias I want to keep, I will have some spares to give away. I will let you know when I have numbers , the only thing I would ask if I need to post them can you cover the postage cost, if you are local happy for you to collect. Not sure how many I will have , but they are all shooting fabulously even before they get planted 😂😂😂

It’s that time of year again when the dahlias go to bed for winter, if your dahlias are browning off, droopy flowers, blown centre in the flowers, it’s time. It’s time to start cutting them down,

As per guidelines from the dahlia society it is suggested that you cut them down one third at a time with a few days rest in between, once cut down you have a choice.

You can dig them up and store them over winter or you can leave them in the ground. If you have the room and have them in pots just leave the pot intact and put in under cover.

If you decide to dig them up and store them , I have previous posts on what works for me and when I do mine I will aim to demonstrate.

In the mean time it’s time to say goodbye to flowers for the season.

Probably the last of the dahlias at their best, it’s nearly the end of their season, also two hours in this glorious sun mowing and weeding , enjoying the last dregs of sun before winter makes its way here

Probably the last flush of flowers for the season but some beautiful blooms.

Season Change Information

As the weather cools and there is a chance of a frost, it does signal the end of the season for dahlias. You will find they will slow flower production and the leaves and stems will start to grow black.

This is the time to either dig them and store them or leave them in the ground, either one you will need to cut them down to stubs, if you are in a area with a high volume of rain it might be worth bringing them under cover or cover the area with either a tarp, and or lots of mulch to try to prevent rot, because they do not like a lot of water while in their dormant phase.

If you dig them up, you can store the whole clump in a mix of potting mix ( just the cheapest you can buy) , vermiculite and saw dust. And store them in a cool dry place, I use our shed.

There is so much information out there, lots of YouTube videos to watch, but this is what I have found works for us.

Good luck

First load for the season, and if you have a look in the back those white things are bird/animal boxes for animals who have lost their home in the storm.
