Sugar Maple. Acer saccharum.

The tree responsible for the most celebrated autumn colour displays in the world — the forests of New England, the maple leaf on the Canadian flag, centuries of cultural and horticultural significance.

In the right cool-climate Australian garden, Acer saccharum delivers gold, orange and scarlet that rivals anything in the northern hemisphere.

Pre-orders for the Bare Root Reserve 2026 are open now. Nine species.
Dispatching 28 July — the botanical ideal for deciduous establishment before spring.

What arrives at your door when you order bare root stock.

A bundle of clean roots. A branching framework. No soil. No pot. No leaves.

Which — if you've never seen it before — looks alarming.

Here's what's actually happening: deciduous trees go fully dormant in winter.

Metabolic activity drops close to zero.

During this window, they can be lifted from the field, packed clean, and transported without stress. The plant isn't struggling. It's resting.

Root systems that haven't been container-bound spread naturally. They establish faster and with more structural integrity than equivalent potted stock.

Your first sign of life — bud break at the growing tips — comes within 4 to 5 weeks of planting. The tree takes it from there.

Tulip Tree. Liriodendron tulipifera.

Ten specimens. No restock this season.

Large, architectural, extraordinary in autumn. On mature specimens, the flowers — tulip-shaped, appearing high in the canopy — stop people mid-step.

The saddle-shaped leaf is unlike any other deciduous tree in this collection. The autumn colour — pure, clean yellow — is equally distinctive.

If this one has been on your list, now is the time. Ten bare root specimens, dispatching 28 July. Pre-orders close 19 July.

Most trees sold in Australia come in containers. Bare root is different.

Bare root trees are field-grown, then lifted during winter dormancy — when the tree is effectively asleep — and dispatched without soil. The roots are intact, the energy reserves are full, and the tree establishes directly into your own soil profile.

It's the format preferred by serious growers, collectors and landscape designers across the UK, Europe and North America. In Australia, it's gaining popularity.

The Bare Root Reserve 2026 is open now — nine deciduous species, dispatching 28 July.

Persian Witch Hazel. Parrotia persica.

Ten specimens. No restock this season.

This is the tree that earns its place across all four seasons — small crimson flowers along bare stems in winter before the foliage emerges, full canopy through spring and summer, then in a good cool autumn a display of crimson, orange, gold and burgundy that few trees can match.

With age, the bark develops into flaking plates of grey, cream, olive and cinnamon. It is a tree for the patient gardener — and one of the most compelling collector deciduous trees available in Australia right now.

Ten bare root specimens. Dispatching 28 July. Pre-orders close 19 July.

The Winter Reserve allocation arrived yesterday. 🌲

Pre-order customers — your trees are here. Dispatch is being organised now to kick off on Monday. You'll hear from us directly with tracking details once your order is on its way.

For anyone who hasn't placed an order yet — pre-orders officially closed on 17 May, but we have a small number of specimens available from the delivered allocation.

If you've been sitting on the fence, this is genuinely the last opportunity.

Once these are gone, that's it for the season.

What arrived: a collection in excellent condition. The candles are pushing, root systems are solid, and the cultivar character is already unmistakable across the range.

The Dragon Eye Korean Pine (Pinus koraiensis) is exactly as distinctive in person as it looks on the page.

The Kyokko Nishiki specimens have the kind of trunk development that takes years to build, and it shows.

Coolwyn Nurseries, Monbulk, Victoria. Worth the wait.
