Time for some orange crush! 💪🏼
Client hated the orange finish applied to the American Oak stair treads and rails. No problem…peel the orange, sprinkle some water, marinade in oil and top with our favourite coating!

We’re very happy with the results of this one! More than just slapping a coat on and asking for a payment…just saying!

Knocked over a quick install last week for Creative Home Renovations in Teringie. We made a transition from the plank onto the cypress pine in the hallway and made good on a section of the subfloor where the joists had a rise of 20mm or so. Once corrected, we could carry on as usual.
Look forward to seeing the cabinetry go in.

Last coats down. The Nordic White softens the yellow of the sealer but the CeramicStar matt gives the durability of wear and will dry to a silky smooth finish.

A quick tour of the next job we’ve started. A great use of dead roof space by creating a loft style living. I love the Blackbutt floors and the raked angles. Credit to the builders on the installation…very tidy indeed.

We just have to bond some spots where there’s a bit of “wind shake” in the grain (as seen in the last pic), essentially a type of grain layer delamination across the growth rings but nothing serious. Just aware of it before the sander chews it up.

We’ve been monitoring the moisture content (MC) and relative humidity (RH) on this one following some recent hot weather that has dried it out a bit and opened some slight gaps. Along with the diligent clients, we managed to control any further concerns with the careful use of humidifiers. Sitting stable at mid 10s-11s MC (healthy range for wood is 9-14%). RH has been between mid 40s and some spikes in the 60s but generally in the 40s range at mid to high 20°C. All in all, we’re in good shape to proceed with sanding but it was hot and stuffy up there today in the mid 30s°C.

Another job is ready for the last 2 coats. Stage 2 of a job we started late last year as you may remember the herringbone with black pinstripes in the border.

The back room was the original kitchen and as we were cleaning out the gaps, there was gross old cooking oil and spices coming out. Maybe enough to make some sawdust papadams. 😅 Some deep stains were too stubborn to remove so maybe a future problem to address for the clients.

Featuring some class sanding from the previous guy!?! 😳

You may have noticed too that we went to the trouble of levelling the herringbone border to the pine and pre-sanding the edge even before we won the front stage. Wonder what got us over the line? 🤓

Anyway, sealer is down so Nordic White tomorrow to tie the tones a bit closer to the herringbone out back and final coat on Thursday. Check in soon!

Another floor rebuild in the books. These old 1950s migrant homes are the backbone of Australian suburbia and now another young couple get to call it their home. We were happy to see their excitement of moving in despite the challenges we faced along the way.

Termites had eaten their way up and down this floor and we only discovered that after removing the carpet. Big sections had to be rebuilt using a custom milled size board as it was non standard size. Heaps of squeaks eliminated simply by punching all the nails deeper, although we discovered several rows of nails had completely missed the joists from the original construction.

A durable coating system of CeramicStar matt was applied and we used PAK Stop to fill the gaps. This is a flexible gap filler designed for large gaps and significantly helps to reduce squeaks as a bonus. Oh and no more draughty gaps.

Happy settling in guys!

Can we make this floor smoother than Barry White? 😎 You know we can! 🙌🏼

Like you, we wondered if this job could be saved and what started out as the “nightmare” job has transformed into the stuff of dreams. This wasn’t a re-sand, this was a restoration!

It threw everything at us!

One whole room alone featured wet rot through little to no subfloor ventilation and the worst cupping I’ve seen in a while, along with every board loose off the joists from rusting nails. All due to the high level of dampness in the subfloor space.

At least 80% of the house had loose supports around the perimeters of the room due to the stone footing disintegrating from high moisture levels. This forced multiple sections to be exposed, shored up and reinstated.

Several areas were better patched in to eliminate poorly engineered “termite inspection manholes” and badly repaired sections where the wrong Baltic species was used creating an obvious past repair.

The back room was beyond saving so we had no choice but to source new flooring after bracing up the framework.

All the patch-ins we carried out were by either recycling existing flooring from the back room or sourcing “new” recycled flooring from salvage yards.

We still have some work to do to fix the subfloor ventilation and complete the repairs to the WIR where it meets the ensuite. Oh yeah and fit some new skirting throughout, but I think you’ll agree it looks a million times better!

We have our work cut out for us with this one…what a shocker! Wet rot (including the jarrah framing…completely gone), more cups than the Mad Hatter’s tea party and lots of repairs to replace very bad patch-ins. If we’re not back in a week send a search party! 😅🙌🏼

Can we bring this old girl back to life??? Guess we’ll have to wait and see!
