Lemon and Citrus Trees 🍋

Winter fruit tree pruning bookings are now open.

Has your lemon tree become crowded, uneven, or difficult to manage?

A good tidy-up prune starts with the basics:
✂️ Remove dead or diseased wood✂️ Remove suckers growing from the base✂️ Remove branches that cross over each other✂️ Remove branches growing inward toward the centre of the tree✂️ Step back regularly and check that the tree still looks balanced

The aim is not to hack the tree back. It is to create a healthier, more manageable shape and remove the growth that is no longer helping the tree.

Clean tools are important too. Pruning tools should be cleaned before starting and between plants to reduce the risk of spreading disease.

Would you like your citrus trees tidied up this winter?

Apple and Pear Trees 🍎🍐

Winter fruit tree pruning bookings are now open.
Once apple trees have dropped their leaves and become dormant, it is a great time to prune them.

For apples, the aim is to control the size and shape of the tree while keeping productive fruiting wood:
✂️ Work back toward the trunk one branch at a time✂️ Remove vertical shoots growing straight up or down✂️ Thin out crowded or crossing branches✂️ Avoid removing too much at once from an older neglected tree

Pears also benefit from careful thinning. Young branches are often left in place, while older laterals may need to be shortened or removed to keep productive fruiting wood coming through.

An old, neglected tree may need to be restored gradually over two or three winters.

Cutting too much off in one go can trigger lots of leafy vertical growth instead of fruit.

Would you like your apple or pear trees pruned properly this winter?

A short week with some long jobs done and dusted 👏

Tyler Streker memorising our 7 “pruning techniques” and officially given the tick of approval for quoting jobs

Nick Webb getting into the first winter pruning of our season

Liam Cottel practicing hedge trimming - straight and round shapes using a machine and the hand shears.

Myself (Karl Leggett) going through the albums and finding photos for something iv been working on for the past year.

Thanks to our lovely clients - it’s a pleasure to serve yas in your gardens! I appreciate that people are willing to take 5 minutes to chat when the guys visit or I call.

The first week of winter is done and wasn’t it cold wet and gloomy

Nick and Liam worked all day on Monday, if you remember what the weather was like, working smart and wearing the correct clothing they kept warm, not necessarily dry

Nick Webb got himself a very nice review from a “head office” person who doing a surprise visit to one of our gardens. Gotta be happy with that!

Tyler Streker returning a missed call to a client after hours and during that call talking through additional work we might be able to do to help and also asking if they would be interested in giving us a Google review after a good verbal review, outstanding!

Liam, despite being late for about the 150th shift in a row (at least he’s consistent) smashing tool maintenance keeping the gear sharp and moving the way it should

We actually also had a job applicant call up sick and try to reschedule their trial shift. You won’t get onto the LKDI gardening team with that attitude, sorry bud!

Thank you very much to our clients for trusting us in their gardens and for taking time out of their day to provide us with feedback so that we know what’s working or what we might be able to improve.

Thank you to our families and friends for looking after us outside of work

And this week especially has been a really good example of seeing a small team look after one another so good job to the gardening team

Have a great weekend folks. If you would like to book a quote with LKDI gardening fill out your details and we will get back to you early next week.

Mount Gambier has celebrated the first day of winter by registering its wettest day in more than two years, as a strong cold front delivered widespread rainfall across the Limestone Coast.

A total of 29.6mm of rain was recorded in the city, equating to more than a third of Mount Gambier’s typical June rainfall in just a single day. It was the city’s wettest day since January 2024 and followed an already wetter than average finish to autumn across much of the region.

But while the first day of winter was wet, it was also unusually mild overnight. Mount Gambier’s official maximum temperature of 13.6° - recorded during the Bureau of Meteorology’s 9am-to-9am observation period - was not reached until after 2am this morning (Tuesday).

Despite the soggy start to the season, the latest modelling from the Bureau of Meteorology is still pointing towards one of the warmest winters on record for southern parts of the country, along with below average rainfall.

Seasonal outlooks indicate daytime temperatures across the region are likely to be 1-2° above long-term winter averages, continuing the warmer trend experienced throughout much of 2026 so far. Average temperatures in Mount Gambier have tracked above the long-term monthly average in every month this year to date.

That included a remarkable 28.5° day on May 1st, which equalled the city’s highest recorded May temperature, last set on May 4th, 1967.

The region is also expected to receive less rainfall than usual this winter, with the Bureau’s outlook favouring a drier season despite higher than average rainfall during May.

Hard Pruning Pittosporum hedges.

https://bit.ly/lkdibooking or call 0400 789 656

This pruning technique is really unique to Pittosporum. There’s a small chance the plant will die!

But generally our clients are at the point where it’s prune them like this or rip them out and replace.

Whoever introduced Pittosporums to Mt Gambier must’ve made a killing at the time and haven’t they left a long lasting impact our community to.

Anybody know the history of Pittosporum tenuifolium in Mt Gambier or Australian landscaping?

Another week bites the dust!

Tyler has been with us for over a year now, fresh off of a 5 year apprentice (of horticulture) he came to us capable but not confident in his ability… this week Tyler visited, typed and priced three quotes with no help needed 💪

Nick is a gun in the garden, you all know that, this week getting to listen to Nick speak about learning management skills has been pretty cool. Check out page too to see a video of Nick latest garden installation.

Liam, quirky as ever, has again come in and saved the day by fixing broken equipment and continues to learn our gardening processes… recently getting ticked off on rose pruning and moving on to Hedgetrimming.

Karl went out on the tools this week and has never felt older in his life 😁

Thanks to our clients for your support and trust.

Thanks to our friends and fam for supporting us outside of work ❤️

If you’d like some help in your garden simply fill out your details right here https://bit.ly/lkdibooking and we’ll get in touch early next week ✌️
