We’ve been quiet on the socials but busy on the decks!

This spotted gum deck was exposed to the elements and finished in acrylic only 12 months ago.

A light sand and an oil finish have done wonders for this lovely timber.

We recommend oil instead of acrylic (water based finishes) every time.

Winter is normally a quiet time for the Deck Doctor, but that has not been the case this year! We managed to restore a number of decks over the winter period working as best we could, between the rain events. Here is some feedback from just one of the decks that we restored over that period.

“Jon has recently completed a complex deck renovation for us.Jon’s skills and workmanship are excellent.

The deck in question had Australian hardwood boards and unfortunately, the majority of the boards were beyond repair and had to be replaced. The existing steps were unsafe and so were rebuilt, as was a handrail. The owners now have a fantastic, useable deck just in time for some warmer weather.

The boards on this 18 month old NSW spotted gum deck had begun to warp from all the recent rain.
A darker stain had been used which masked the beautiful natural tones of the timber.
Along with a sand and oil, some boards had to be replaced and others trimmed to widen the gap between them to minimise any future warping.

This 12 year old Australian hardwood deck had certainly seen better days.
Minimal gaps between the boards resulted in water pooling, meaning the boards rarely dried out, were rotting and had areas of patchy mould.
To make matters worse, numerous coats of acrylic had previously been applied.
There was no saving these boards so the client chose to replace them with wider Merbau boards.

This well built Merbau deck had previously been coated in acrylic and was showing signs of wear and discoloration, particularly due to foot traffic.
A good sand, clean and oil brought it back to its former glory.
Cutek oil in the colour tone New Bronze was used. This colour tone works particularly well with Merbau decking as it reflects the original colour of the timber

This older Australian hardwood deck is completely under cover so is well protected. The new owners weren’t sure of it’s cleaning and oiling history but it was patchy in places.

This beautiful jarrah deck was located in Bywong and was built in two different stages.
Although undercover, the boards in the older sections were weathered.
The new section was not sealed after construction so also needed some TLC.
Some light sanding was required prior to a good clean and the whole deck was finished in Cutek oil in Walnut.

It was oiled at the time but the photos show how quickly timber can deteriorate without regular care.
The photos also show how a good clean and oil can bring it back to its former glory. No sanding was required.

This beautiful spotted gum deck was badly weathered in parts. It had only be oiled once and then covered in acrylic over the last few years.
The acrylic was stripped then the deck was given a good sanding, before being oiled with Cutek oil in golden tones.
