// Changing seasons and adaptive reuse on the heritage-listed Regent Theatre in Murwillumbah.

A heavily constrained site also provides many opportunities for a new vision. This side facade of the theatre has become a new public address - which leverages the relationship with the main town park adjacent, and provides an introduction to the art deco theatre and overall precinct.

Corten steel has been used to offset yet complement the original theatre materials and features.

// Like every modern office we use all the computer technology available to bring a building into realisation. However every project in our office still starts with a hand sketch and then the drawing board.
//
There’s something about drawing on butter paper with a heavy 6B pencil, organising the site, the hierarchy between key elements, becoming absorbed into the ‘feeling’ of the design outcome, that you simply can’t replicate with any computer technology.
//
These are a few process sketches and drawings from a new house in the countryside, Northern NSW. The client particularly loved the messy yellow trace sketch - even though that’s the most abstract of them all. She loved the feeling behind it, and it made sense to her.
//
No sketch or design thinking is complete without a section drawing. These are developed hand in hand with the plan and never as an after thought.
//
Once the sketch goes onto the drawing board you’re then analysing the design and space constantly in relation to the human scale. You are very present with the design moves and continually assessing the micro along with the macro. On a scaleless computer screen this is not possible to do.
//
Sketch design is all about process. Process of site interrogation, exploration, development. It’s a tool but it’s also the outcome. And it’s a joy.

// From the archives - Palm Beach House
As we celebrate our 8th year as a practice it is incredibly rewarding to look back through our studio archives and see a project we designed standing beautifully in the physical world.
//
Designed during the “Covid era”, this home has grown beautifully into the local streetscape over the last few years. Bali Avenue is a very typical, suburban Palm Beach road, making this bold modernist structure a striking anomaly along the street.
//
Back in late 2019, Patternshop* was brought on board to solve a complex design puzzle for this site. We took an initially unbuildable brief and spent six rigorous months on the drawing board completely re-imagining the home from the ground up - developing the entire modernist architectural language, spatial layouts, and structural logic from scratch.
//
Our core concept revolved around creating a striking, sculptural off-form concrete portal frame to enclose the upper level. This bold framing is paired with deep recessed voids, dark vertical privacy screening, and a minimalist entry gatehouse to anchor the home to its beachside context.
//
Swipe through to see our original diagrammatic model, early concept renders, and some photos of the completed structure today. Seeing our May 2020 concept and developed designs brought to life so precisely by the build team is a testament to the enduring power of strong architectural foundations.

// It is an incredible milestone when years of design work, heritage DA approvals, and strict CC documentation finally culminate in a project “getting out of the ground”.

This has been a beautifully challenging commercial infill project, successfully navigating complex heritage, fire, flooding and zoning constraints.

We are so proud of steering this design over the final approval hurdles and seeing our architectural vision ready for the site. A project of this scale over 5 years takes a dedicated team - a massive thank you to our team members along the way for their brilliant design and documentation work - Aidan, Hugo, Afifah, and Percy.

Our architectural response focused heavily on preservation, maintaining the building’s historic soul by celebrating the original timber roof trusses and existing hardwood studwork. The final design incorporated into the 600sqms of floor area reveals a grand timber colonnade on the eastern facade, seamlessly integrating modern accessibility and flood resilience. A landscaped internal courtyard completes the new public interface and vision.

From its past life as a grocer, baker & warehouse, to its future as creative industry studios associated with the ever-expanding M|Arts Precinct, we are thrilled to have designed a space that will be much loved into the future by both its tenants and visitors alike.
//

// RED SHED // Process & flow

Every design begins with a sketch. These working diagrams take in the macro and the micro simultaneously - something a computer can never quite do.
/
Feeling wind patterns and human movement. Historic and predictive at once. Sunlight access is always key, regardless of climate or location - and how we shape it within our environment.
/
We took cues from the old and worked with what remained. Heavy trusses, stud walls, flooring - all maintained. Newer tin peeled back to reveal the original hardwood posts. Posts that survived many floods. Remnants of an early macadamia nut cracking shed.
/
Whispers remain.

// We love adaptive reuse. Come with us on the journey as we transform this 96-year-old commercial building in Murwillumbah C*D into a new cultural and creative space.
A 600sqm building that formerly housed a butcher, bakery & grocer, we are now peeling back the layers of history and story - exposing the bones we love and want to build the new space around. Old bottles under the floorboards. An Italian crate in the walls. A receipt from the Tweed Fruit Exchange. This building has been holding onto its secrets.
Five years on the drawing board and a Construction Certificate later, works can begin.
