At its February meeting, the Kadaltilla Board reviewed the strategic direction of the Adelaide Park Lands Trail’s Rest Stop Design Guidelines, setting the stage for a more connected, accessible, and enjoyable Park Lands experience.
The Adelaide Park Lands Trail is a continuous 19.5km shared-use loop around the Adelaide Park Lands — connecting key open spaces and destinations for walking, cycling, wheeling and recreation.
The Guidelines aim to:
🌿 Improve access to high-quality Park Lands
🚶 Support walking, cycling and wheeling along the Trail
🌳 Increase tree canopy and enhance thermal comfort
♿ Deliver more accessible rest stops and crossings in line with the Disability Access and Inclusion Plan
💻 A digital planning tool has also been developed to support internal coordination, planning and delivery of Trail improvements.
Proposed Rest Stop Hierarchy:
🌱 Breather — every 50–100m
🌿 Pause — every 400m
⭐ Break — every 1.6–2km
🌳 Stay/Start — every 3–6km
The Rest Stop Design Guidelines establish a consistent and practical framework for the planning, siting and design of rest stops along the Trail, helping to shape a more connected, inclusive and climate-responsive Park Lands experience.
➡️ Next Phase:
⭐ Establish a clear and consistent framework for paths, public realm and infrastructure
🌿 Guide future upgrades and developments to support high-quality, inclusive and durable design
⭐ Align with APLMS 2036, Building Design Guidelines and ODASA Principles of Good Design
🌿 Provide a shared reference for Council, consultants and delivery partners to ensure coordinated implementation
