The wet season is upon us here in the Subtropics so we would like to share a few reasons as to why it's best to wait for your lawn to dry before mowing it.

Mowing wet grass can leave it vulnerable to fungal diseases that can quickly spread and take over your lawn. Dry grass will always cut cleanly (As long as your mower blades are sharp) but wet grass will tear and become damaged due to heavy water droplets weighing down the blades, leaving the cut uneven. The damage inflicted to the grass, along with clumpy clippings and the added moisture opens the door for fungus to spread, creating the perfect conditions for fungal infestations!

Running a mower over soggy grass will potentially create ruts in the soil, damaging the grass in the process and compacting the ground beneath. Compacted soil will disrupt the root system of your lawn and also cause water runoff issues. Lastly, wet grass clippings have the potential to damage the metal parts of the mower. If wet clippings are left to sit under the mower and around the blade, then rust may begin to set in after a while. Mowers will also choke on the clippings and then spit out clumps of wet grass. The presence of this caked substance stresses the engine and impedes the motion of the blade.

Hope this helps!

Homemade Horticultural Sunflower White Oil

Horticultural white oil is one of the best ways to organically control sucking and chewing insects such as scale, citrus leaf miner, mealy bugs and aphids. Itโ€™s poison free and works by coating their spiracles (breathing holes located on the outside of the insectโ€™s exoskeleton) in oil, causing suffocation.

These bugs can be quite damaging to plants when infestations are left unchecked as they extract sap and other material from the leaves and stems, leaving the plants weak and less resistant to diseases. Sucker bugs such as aphids also increase the chance of black sooty mould (a type of fungi), developing on plants due to the presence of honeydew that is secreted by the insects.

Detailed instructions:

2 cups of sunflower oil
1 cup of organic dish washing detergent

Thatโ€™s it!

Place the concentrated solution in a jar and store in a cool spot away from direct sunlight. Do not use directly on plants as it will need to be diluted first. Be sure to place a label on it.

Application rate:

Mix 1 tablespoon of while oil and 1 litre of water into a clearly labelled spray bottle and shake well.

How to use:

Apply to the affected plants liberally, paying extra attention to the back of the leaves as insects like to hide and lay eggs there. Start from the top and work your way down, ensuring all infected areas have been treated. Use all year round.

Precautions to be aware of

Never use white oil on hot sunny days (over 25 degrees Celsius) as it may burn your plants. Be sure to test the white oil on a small portion of the plant first to ensure no adverse side effects occur.
