Very exciting news!!

The platypus will soon be making a return to Royal National Park after an absence of nearly 50 years.

Platypus once thrived in the rivers of Australiaโ€™s first national park, but there have been no recorded sightings since the 1970s. The project is a collaboration between NPWS, University of New South Wales, WWF-Australia and Taronga Zoo.

An initial group of 10 platypus will be released into the park in 2022, fitted with tags so researchers can track their progress and breeding activity for up to two years. The area will also be monitored for risks such as human activity, feral predators and fire protection.

We will also be investing in platypus-friendly public viewing platforms once the initial population is established.
