While we are talking about jobs at heights have a look at this , the lead parapet cover work that Eioane did for us at the Tabernacle is sublime .
Just look at this and admire , it’s beautiful.
Since Paul , our great friend , craftsman and the last skilled slater / leadworker and coppersmith in the village passed away a few years ago I’ve struggled to find a lead worker of Pauls capabilities, fortunately we’ve now found one for all our future lead work , a true Scottish craftsman
But luckily I have photos to show because once the scaffolding is down , as Paul would always say , only the pigeons will get to see it .

As I always say , we do get to work on some amazing buildings .
This is the view from the roof of the origional Newcastle post office .
The original telegraph office is next door and the police lock up next to that.
We are doing some slate repairs and also re installed the flag pole above the entry to the lock up today.
More photos and work to be done by us on these old girls
Also have more work to be done across the road at the T and G buildings tower , which will be fun indeed

As the clients at Bruce St continue to ask for more work to be done to their beautiful home , we have transformed the area that once was a forgotten grass wasteland which was initially going to be a deck, but has now , council approved , been turned into a very cozy sunroom .
It has a triple glass slider at one end and an electric motored huge remote control opening awning window at the kitchen end with a continued stone servery bench top from the kitchen out to it.
It also has a fixed velux sky window with a remote solar blind installed .
We made some timber screens to cover the bathroom and WC windows , which have both been sealed up and high powered exhaust fans fitted so no smells or steam can seep out into the sunroom .
We continued the 135 mm spotted gum floor out there and lined 2 walls with V - joint hardies board.
From a complete wasted area of non usable space it has now become ,as the owners said to me , the cosiest room in the house to be in on a cold wet day , came up a treat indeed

yet again its been a while between posts , theres been a lot happening and just havnt had time to do the social media stuff which I enjoy showcasing what we do but isnt the most important thing in the buisness .
One job done recently was a floating floor in the 1879 place at Lambton.
The kitchen and lounge rooms entire subfloor was in poor nick and as much as I dont like pulling origional timbers out , that subfloor was too far gone .
Floor and subfloor was pulled out and extra piers were poured to shorten the spans and strengthen the floor to reduce bounce .
H3 and H4 timbers were laid , subfloor air circulation installed , H3 MR particle board flooring laid on that and floating floor laid on top of that
The water ingress issues have been sorted and the owners went the economical option of floating floor and it came up pretty well for a floating floor .
Marshalls kerfed piece that he made for around the step / floor transition came up an absolute treat too .
Overall a great result was achieved at an economical cost .xx

Scottish Ken and his son Steve are the slaters doing the Tabernacle , they have definetly battled the weather over the past 6 days and are charging along at a great rate.
Southern side has been completely stripped of old slate and battens and has been sarked and battened ready to start accept slate on Wedensday , tomorrow the beautiful new copper gutter is going on the southern side of the building .
Interesting thing discovered whilst the boys were removing the slates is that its actually been re slated at some point in its 145 year history , battens not replaced just the slates , its not documented anywhere and none of the parishioners seem to know anything about it , but the nail holes in the old battens show where the origional slates were pinned , interesting indeed and the view is brilliant .

The Tabernacles roof structure in itself is such a beautiful piece of craftsmanship that back in the 1800's was just another build for the chippies , brickies and roofers that worked on it , all hand built and lifted manually into position .
A lot of the timber was actually run up and sized on site , so Ive been told by a couple of the older parishioners of the church who were told by their forebears.
Big baulks of oregan were bought to site on bullock carts and a pit saw was set up on the grounds and it was all sawn into the pieces we see today .
On closer inspection of the pedestal pillars that surround the front parapet some sections will definetly need a bit of love given to them , really interesting to get up close and personal with them , only realising then that the two sides of the building have different mouldings above the pillars , one a Scotia the other a quad but looking from the street you would never of picked it , love the places our work takes us .

and so it starts with damp applause .Cheers to Brad and Anthony from scaffbuilt solutions for the quality scaffolding .

whats that you say , what has happened to Rob , he hasn't posted for yonks and I am missing his posts .
Well it goes like this , after last years heart attack I had to get an angiogram in March , that showed my heart arteries had a few blockages and bypass surgery was recommended.
I went in to Lake Mac for my surgery , which you wouldn't believe also happened to be on my 61st birthday .
Dont remember much about my birthday but made it through the op , was barred from work for 8 weeks which was tough .
Then back to light duties and at 12 weeks back into it full on.
I feel good and ready to continue where we left off.
I cant thank my fabulous wife enough for all she did for me whilst I was incapacitated , both physically and mentally I suffered a bit and she had to put up with my mood and me being in a touch of pain not a great combination.
I also couldn't be more proud of Jackson and Marshall who took the reigns of the business whilst I was off , everything ran so smoothly and I feel both the boys matured towards the business over the time and Im sure I could of had much more time off and all would be fine with them running things, the buisness was definetly in good hands and all our clients heaped praise on the way the boys got things done.
Cheers to all of you who txted , rang , dropped in or just asked the boys or Kez how I was going.
Well I'm back with a massive part 2 of the year ahead with some really fabulous projects to do.
I'll post up some pics of March through to nows work as well over the next few days , cheers to all and heres some pics of what I did on my break , well an enforced break .

Again I get to see and price some interesting jobs.
Im sure all Novacastrians know this place , its on the property that was Baileys orchard.
A storm came through a while back and a branch cleaned up the shed .
We've been asked to price restoring the shed using as much materials as possible from that what is left on site and also use what National Parks have in storage in the shed on the same block.
Shall be an interesting one if we get the work indeed.
Found this article on the property on a National Parks page.
Another locally important group of features are the relics of orcharding operations in the southern and northern ends of the park. In 1856 Mr Walter Bailey developed a 120 acre orchard and market garden in the valley above the southern end of the Dudley Beach. The farm was called Mount Pleasant and produced a variety of vegetables and fruit. After the death of Walter and his wife the property was divided amongst their eight children. Two of the children, Arthur and Charles Bailey, bought more land at the northern end of the park from the old Burwood/Merewether estate, and also set up orchards.

Things you find when you open up a wall thats been enclosed for a long time.
There was a letter from a previous owner about them and the house and a bottle of red wine , which the cockroaches had gotten to.
So good to find easter eggs , as I call them , that someone who loved the house took the time to leave behind .
The boys and I always leave a note somewhere in our builds or on the ridge if we pitch a roof , we write our first names , the date and what the weather was like .
