Fruit set- When growing fruit it’s often said you need potassium for flowers and fruit. While this is true, there are a few things you can do for your citrus trees before racing off to buy a bag of potassium fertiliser.
🌳
1) Compost or manure; citrus really benefit from the addition of quality compost or manure, it will encourage beneficial microorganisms and help water retention in the soil.
🌳
2) Mulch; keeping a good layer of mulch will mean organic matter is continually breaking down and improving soil health, as well as shading the soil and preventing drying out. (The lemon tree in the picture is constantly getting branches cut and thrown underneath for mulch, that seems to be enough)
🌳
3) Watering; when citrus are covered in flowers and the bees are doing their thing it’s really important your trees have ample water. Get the water into the ground before and during this time.

Strong winds around this time can also cause drying and even blow a lot of the flowers off the tree.

Once you’ve done these steps, you will probably find your citrus going gangbusters.

Plan for abundance. Start now, start small. With a bit of planning and time spent in the garden, you can have fresh food outside your door. This little pocket is less than a metre square. Red papaya underplanted with native Midyim berry, Cyanea-scurvy w**d and silver beet. Who needs help to plan for food security?
