Noosa Council has boosted its resources to help regulate short-stay properties, after a review of a local law introduced a year ago. Two new temporary compliance officers will help work through a backlog of short-stay applications, increase enforcement and identify unapproved short-stay properties.....

At Noosa Council’s General Committee Meeting on 14 November 2022, the Council released the Short Term Accommodation Monitoring Report. The Report provides economic and social analysis of the monitoring that was undertaken and, in conclusion, makes recommendations to amend the Noosa Plan 2020.

Recommendations supported by Noosa Shire Council

The Report recommends that short term accommodations be made an inconsistent use in Medium and High-Density Residential zones and the Rural and Rural Residential zones, with the only allowance being residents making their principal place of residence available for short term accommodation for no more than 4 times and 60 days per calendar year.

The Report also recommends a review of the spatial allocation of the Tourism Accommodation zone and Medium and High-Density Residential zone to ensure the zoning reflects the desired long term uses within each zone being either for permanent housing for residents or visitor accommodation and tourism uses. It is also recommended that short term accommodation be an inconsistent usein business centre zones.

Endorsement of the recommended amendments was carried unanimously by the council on 17 November 2022, without appropriate scrutiny or public consultation on the potential ramifications of the amendment. The timeline for drafting, approval and implementation of amendments is unclear.
