Wow, it’s been an interesting season. The condition of some chimneys even surprised us. One customer had a wood heater which was only installed 3 years ago. I immediately noticed the smoke stain on the ceiling near the flue and he confirmed it had been there since the start. It had an elbow in the flue to get past a beam. The plumber however had not fastened together any of the elbows or active flue. In fact, they weren’t even connected resulting smoke and debris going straight back into the house. As2918 dictates that each active flue must be fastened together with 3 stainless steel fasteners and a decent plumber will use pop rivets and not screws. Again there were a number of chimneys that we could not clean as the screws would not allow our brushes to pass.
We had a rental where tenants were moving in that day. The heater looked great, but the flue looked like something out of a road runner cartoon. It had been assembled with mismatched parts of different chimneys and not connected. See pic above.
Another chimney we inspected was just a shell on the roof. It was missing half the flue.
Please get your chimney checked even if you usually clean it yourself. Contact your landlord or realestate if you are renting and demand an inspection. Why are the rocks tied to that cowl in that pic? It held the cowl on top of the chimney as the rest of the cowl had rusted away 😀. Yes, they walk amongst us.

Wow, what a busy week it’s been. Unfortunately we had to cut our day short in korumburra as the weather very quickly turned. The storm damage in Mirboo North was an eye opener. So far most of my customers escaped mayor damage. Please get your system serviced regularly. We came across flues split so badly you could your whole hand in there. Some had already collapsed, but thankfully not while the fire was on. We’ve had to cut out baffle plates because the owners had waited too long to replace it. One inbuild heater had a crack that allowed us to look into the next room. She called as she believed it had been 3 years since she last called us. It had been 6. When I asked how old the heater was she thought it was about 7 years old. After finding the paperwork she realized it was 20 years old. Time flies. We always get on the roof where possible even though you can clean the flue from the bottom. I however often find serious issues that could not be seen from the ground. The issues aren’t always related to the chimney. Sometimes we end up cleaning the gutters as well. One lady had a massive hole in her roof ( she moved in that day) which explained the water damage on the ceiling.
Please get your system checked before the real cold sets in.

The tools of the trade. The jug was owned by my grandfather who started delivering soap with his horse and carriage. He then switched to heating oil and then chimney sweep. His 6 sons also continued the chimney sweep trade and so did many of their sons including myself. The book is a trade manual from my grandfather in law who was a builder. The man had a heart of gold and skilled hands to match. My mother in law found it and I find it amusing that it’s in Dutch.
I’ve been fortunate my entire life and it started right here, with good hard working grandparents. There was never any drugs or anger in my family hence I’m not quick to anger myself though I have zero tolerance to insincerity or lies). Many aren’t that fortunate. So grateful.

“I think my flue might be blocked”. Well yes, it was. A full bucket of hardened creosote in the elbow. It didn’t help that the cowl was in a number of pieces with the convex disc that should be welded on the inside of the lid has come of and has fallen into the flue. It’s not the first time I’ve come across these type of cowls where the disc has come loose. Very dangerous. Avoid those type of cowl.
What state is your cowl in? Is it at point of collapse? Do you have an elbow in your flue? Just a fist full of creosote in that elbow and your flue is half blocked. This year has been another busy one. I have never seen this many dangerous, non compliant installations in such a short time. We had three installations in one day where the flue wasn’t even fastened together. One installation was one year old. It was not long enough, upside down and not fastened together. Wood heaters must be installed by a licensed plumber and comply to Australian standards AS2918.
We had a number of older heaters that should have been decommissioned years ago. One installation the flue was not only not fastened together, it wasn’t even connected! When was the last time your installation or that of your parent’s was checked? Is it safe?

It’s been another interesting week. One elderly lady was very lucky that her daughter called me with her concerns about her mother’s wood heater. This flue was so blocked it’s only pure luck that this lady didn’t have a fire or suffer serious carbon monoxide poisoning. In another case we had to cut the cowl off the chimney to gain access to the flue as the cowl was stuck in so much creosote buildup. These are just the obvious cases. We had to advise 4 tenants that the wood heater in their rental were not safe to use. Some could be fixed by a licensed plumber, in another case both the chimney and heater had to be replaced altogether. Please, get your system checked. A well maintained wood heater is safer and more efficient. Don’t wait until smoke comes in the house or worse.

Heading into the colder days now and time to get your chimney swept and checked. I tore my calf muscle at the start of February and hope to be fully recovered by April. We have never had this many bookings before winter ever. Get your booking in now so that you don’t get caught out over winter. If you haven’t ordered your wood yet, order it now! As we get further into winter, wood quality goes down and the price goes up.
