A golden surprise in the autumn garden 🌼

The beautiful Sternbergia lutea, commonly known as yellow autumn crocus, is one of those magical plants that appears just when many gardens begin to slow down.

Despite its common name, it isn’t actually a true crocus. The real autumn crocus belongs to the genus Colchicum, while this cheerful golden flower is part of the Sternbergia family. Its bright yellow blooms pop up in early to mid-autumn, bringing a welcome splash of colour when many other plants are fading.

Why gardeners love yellow autumn crocus:

🌼 Autumn colour
When most flowers are finishing for the season, these vibrant golden blooms emerge from the soil like little bursts of sunshine.

🌱 Tough and reliable
Once established, they are drought tolerant and surprisingly hardy, making them perfect for low-maintenance gardens.

☀️ Mediterranean origins
Native to parts of southern Europe and the Mediterranean, they thrive in well-drained soil and sunny positions, making them ideal for warm borders, rock gardens, or naturalised areas.

🌿 Foliage timing
The glossy green leaves appear after flowering and through winter, quietly gathering energy before dying back in spring.

Planting tips:
• Plant bulbs in late summer
• Choose a sunny, well-drained position
• Plant about 8–10 cm deep
• Allow them to naturalise for a beautiful drift over time

Small but striking, yellow autumn crocus remind us that the garden always has one more surprise waiting — even as the seasons begin to turn.

Fixing Uneven Lawns the Simple Way 🌿

One of the easiest ways to fix bumps and uneven patches in your lawn is with top dressing.

A thin layer of quality lawn top dressing soil is spread over the low areas of the lawn. Over time, the grass grows up through the soil, gradually filling the gaps and creating a smoother, more even surface.

Why top dress your lawn?

🌱 Levels uneven areas
🌱 Encourages healthy new grass growth
🌱 Improves soil quality
🌱 Helps create a thicker, greener lawn

The key is to apply a light layer so the existing grass can still push through. With regular watering and a little patience, the lawn will naturally knit back together and even itself out.

Gardening is often about working with nature, not against it — and lawns are great at repairing themselves when given the right conditions.

If you’ve been following us on social media for a while, you’ll know I’m a little obsessed with bees! 🐝

And for good reason… they are the miracle workers of the garden. Literally.

Without bees and their incredible pollination work, we wouldn’t have many of the fruits and vegetables we enjoy every day. From apples to pumpkins, tomatoes to berries — these tiny creatures make a huge impact.

So if you see bees buzzing around your garden, celebrate them. Plant flowers, avoid spraying, and let them do their magical work. Your garden (and the planet) will thank you.

Gifts from the garden… 🌿🥔
Freshly dug home-grown potatoes.

Not only do they taste incredible, potatoes are actually packed with goodness. They’re a great source of vitamin C, potassium, fibre and slow-release carbohydrates that help keep your energy steady.

When you grow them yourself you get them fresh, chemical-free and nutrient rich, straight from the soil to the kitchen.

Simple food. Real food. The best kind. 😋

Happy International Women’s Day 🌿

Today we celebrate the strength of women in all its forms — the bold, the brave, and the quietly resilient.

The women who keep showing up.
Who rebuild, nurture, protect, lead, and love deeply.
Who support others while carrying their own stories of courage.

Here’s to the women who inspire us, lift each other up, and make the world better in ways both big and small.

We had the pleasure of helping this beautiful lady in her garden today. Gosh, we really do get to meet some wonderful humans 😍 — and the most beautiful puppy dogs too.

Our lovely client is holding her adorable Louie… a true gentleman and quite the little debonair. 🐾✨

Days like this remind us that gardening isn’t just about plants — it’s about people, connection, and the small joyful moments shared in beautiful spaces.

I love this 🌱🌸💚

The simplest things feel like magic — feathers splashing, water droplets sparkling, the gentle confidence of a wild visitor who knows this is a safe place to land.

Nature is so awesome. 🖤✨

🍂 Autumn in the Cool-Climate Garden 🍂

The light softens, mornings grow crisp, and suddenly the garden feels reflective… but don’t be fooled — this is one of the MOST important seasons for setting your garden up for success.

Here’s what to focus on now:

🌱 Plant Trees & Shrubs
Cool soil, warm roots. Perfect planting conditions! Deciduous trees, roses, hedging, and structural shrubs establish beautifully now.

🌹 Feed Your Roses
A gentle autumn feed strengthens roots before winter dormancy. Healthy roots = stronger spring growth.

🌷 Plant Spring Bulbs
Think tulips, daffodils, ranunculus, anemones. Future-you will be so grateful.

✂️ Light Pruning & Deadheading
Tidy perennials, cut back spent flower stems, and remove diseased foliage — but leave ornamental grasses for winter texture.

🌾 Top Up Mulch
Insulate soil before frost hits. A generous layer of compost or organic mulch protects roots and improves soil life.

🌼 Divide Perennials
Clumps looking tired? Lift, divide, replant. Free plants and rejuvenated growth.

🥕 Plant Cool-Season Edibles
Broad beans, garlic, spinach, peas, coriander — cool-climate abundance begins now.

🍁 Lawn Care (Minimal but Smart)
Aerate compacted areas and top-dress lightly. Let lawns rest rather than push growth.

Autumn isn’t an ending — it’s a quiet beginning.
Everything you do now whispers into spring.

Bees glorious bees 🐝

The gentle hum. The golden dusting of pollen. The quiet, tireless work happening in every corner of the garden. Bees are not just visitors — they are the heartbeat of our blooms, the keepers of our harvest, the reason our roses are heavy with petals and our fruit trees bend with promise.

Plant for them. Protect them. Celebrate them.

Because a garden without bees… is a garden without soul. 🌼

A spectacular pleached hornbeam hedge showing just how powerful vertical planting can be in a narrow space 🌿

Underplanted with lush Chinese Star Jasmine for softness and fragrance, and anchored by a crisp Japanese box hedge, this layered combination creates structure, privacy, and year-round greenery without overwhelming the garden footprint.

Beautifully trimmed today by ✂️ Neil, whose attention to detail keeps the framework sharp while allowing the underplanting to spill gently beneath.

Pleached hornbeam is such a clever solution for tight boundaries — offering height, filtered screening, seasonal interest, and that timeless European garden feel we all love.

🐾 Cheeky Freddy in the Garden 🐾
Yesterday, while I popped inside to check the shape of a tree from our client’s lounge room vista, Freddy decided he absolutely must follow.

Unfortunately, the doggy door had other ideas…

Cavalier logic:
If mum goes inside → I go inside.
No matter the door size.

Meanwhile, the tree still needs pruning, the garden keeps growing, and Freddy remains committed to supervising every single job (whether invited or not).

A gentle rescue, plenty of laughter, and one slightly humbled garden assistant 💛🌿
