A golden surprise in the autumn garden 🌼
The beautiful Sternbergia lutea, commonly known as yellow autumn crocus, is one of those magical plants that appears just when many gardens begin to slow down.
Despite its common name, it isn’t actually a true crocus. The real autumn crocus belongs to the genus Colchicum, while this cheerful golden flower is part of the Sternbergia family. Its bright yellow blooms pop up in early to mid-autumn, bringing a welcome splash of colour when many other plants are fading.
Why gardeners love yellow autumn crocus:
🌼 Autumn colour
When most flowers are finishing for the season, these vibrant golden blooms emerge from the soil like little bursts of sunshine.
🌱 Tough and reliable
Once established, they are drought tolerant and surprisingly hardy, making them perfect for low-maintenance gardens.
☀️ Mediterranean origins
Native to parts of southern Europe and the Mediterranean, they thrive in well-drained soil and sunny positions, making them ideal for warm borders, rock gardens, or naturalised areas.
🌿 Foliage timing
The glossy green leaves appear after flowering and through winter, quietly gathering energy before dying back in spring.
Planting tips:
• Plant bulbs in late summer
• Choose a sunny, well-drained position
• Plant about 8–10 cm deep
• Allow them to naturalise for a beautiful drift over time
Small but striking, yellow autumn crocus remind us that the garden always has one more surprise waiting — even as the seasons begin to turn.
