It's been a big year in 2023, as I took on our own house build in Dudley East. It's the first of two stages, designed by us and SustainaBuilding.
Drawing from some elements of passive house principles we achieved a NatHERS star rating of 7.8 stars. Some of the principles we employed were a ventilated cladding and roof system, an airtight and vapour permeable building wrap to stop unwanted air leaks and loss of warm air. Lastly, an energy recovery system to recover heat from the house as it's exhausted from the bathroom, that's directed into the bedrooms.
We've tried to use second hand materials where available, such as most of the double glazed glass, old woolshed galv corrugated iron, locally sourced cypress pine and a lot of FB market place bargains.
While managing to keep costs down as much as we could, opting for a solar and battery stand alone system for our power needs from Josh Sheppard Electrical was on parr with the upfront costs of being grid connected with the added bonus of not having power or gas bills to worry about.
