Werrington House

Werrington House Werrington House was built by convict labour between 1829-1832 on Governor Philip Gidley King's (3rd Governor of NSW) 1806 land grant.

Governor Philip Gidley King, the 3rd Governor of NSW was granted a substantial land grant by his successor Governor William Bligh (Mutiny on the Bounty) on his departure to England due to ill health. Werrington House is situated on the last remaining near 5 acres of this original land holding. In 1826 Mary King, the youngest child of Governor King married Robert Copland Lethbridge in England. They

emigrated to Australia shortly thereafter. Mary's personal land grant of 691 acres was added to by her husband with another 600 acres, ensuring the estate was 1291 acres in total. "He will build on the third rise of ground from the old stock yard, where your father (Governor King) proposed building....... and will be a pretty situation. He builds with stone which is found in great quantities on the range of hills near it". An extract from a letter written by Harriet King in 1829 - noting the beginning of building works at Werrington House. The house was completed in 1832 and the Georgian design was based on the Lethbridge family home 'Madford' in Cornwall.

Thank you everyone for your lovely comments. Werrington House is truly unique and we feel very blessed to be in the position to have restored it, enhanced it, and landscaped the gardens. We count ourselves exceptionally lucky to live in such a historic home, which is our family home. It is our intention to open the house to the public again. However, we have lots of jobs that need doing prior to that occurring. The extreme weather over the last few years has taken a toll on the house and we need to repair leaks and repaint sections. When we do open the house, it will be announced here. In the interim, I shall try and find some more photos to share. It's lovely to see that people are interested in local history. Peter and I appreciate your interest and will aim to open the house so that you can see for yourself the magic of Werrington House.
