A garage door not sitting quite right can be a sign of something more serious.

I attended this door in Sorrento today after concerns that it was no longer sitting flush when closed.

From the outside, the uneven gaps were the obvious problem. But after inspecting the complete door, I found the rear-sprung lifting cables were badly frayed and require urgent replacement.

I also identified areas of the door beginning to split, which will require reinforcement plates to help prevent further damage.

The door was still operating, but this is a good example of why changes in the way a garage door sits, sounds or operates shouldn’t be ignored. Sometimes the visible issue is only part of the problem.

Sometimes the problem you call about isn’t the only problem there.

I attended a garage door on Friday after it had become stuck open and the existing motor was showing a fault.

After testing the opener, I attempted to reset and reprogram it, but the unit would no longer accept the programming and will need to be replaced.

While inspecting the rest of the door, I also found the lifting cables had begun to fray.

The door was secured and left operating manually so it could still be safely opened and closed while replacement parts are organised.

This is why I look at the whole door, not just the fault I was originally called out for. A motor issue might be obvious, but wear and tear elsewhere in the system can easily be missed until something fails completely.

If your garage door has started behaving differently — struggling to open, reversing, making unusual noises or simply not feeling the way it normally does — it’s worth having it checked.

A few of the things I come across behind the garage door…

A garage door doesn’t always have to completely stop working before there’s a problem.

These are all faults I’ve come across while servicing and repairing doors around Perth. Badly frayed lifting cables, cables coming off or tangling around drums, doors lifting unevenly, and hardware that has deteriorated over time.

Sometimes the first sign is something small. The door sounds different, one side starts moving before the other, the motor seems to be working harder, or the door just doesn’t feel as smooth as it used to.

That’s why when I attend a garage door, I don’t just look at the obvious problem. I check how the whole door is operating and try to work out why the issue has occurred in the first place.

If something can be adjusted or repaired, I’ll tell you. If a component genuinely needs replacing, I’ll explain what I’ve found and why.

Hey everyone, Sheldon from Celestial Doors here.

I’ve got some availability this Wednesday and Friday and thought I’d put it out locally before filling the days elsewhere.

Celestial Doors is owner-operated, so when you message the page, speak on the phone or book a job, it’s me you’re dealing with — and I’m the one who turns up to do the work.

Garage door not closing properly? It could be more than just the motor.

We recently attended a service call in Rivervale where the client’s garage door was still operating, but wasn’t closing properly.

On inspection, we found the cables had started splitting in several places, causing one side of the door to lift off the ground. The door was also out of balance, putting extra strain on the cables.

Luckily, it was caught before a cable snapped, which could have caused damage inside the garage or become a serious safety risk.

A few signs your garage door may need attention:

✅ Door not closing evenly
✅ One side lifting before the other
✅ Frayed or splitting cables
✅ Door feeling heavy
✅ Loud scraping, grinding or banging
✅ Motor working harder than normal

If something doesn’t look or sound right, don’t force the door to keep operating.

⚠️ Garage door safety check after the recent windy weather ⚠️

Hi everyone, just sharing this in case anyone’s garage door has been affected by the recent wind.

With the windy weather we’ve had lately, it’s worth checking your garage door for any signs of damage before small issues turn into bigger, more expensive repairs.

Things to look out for:

✅ Door sitting uneven
✅ Loud banging, scraping or grinding noises
✅ Frayed or loose cables
✅ Door struggling to open or close
✅ Motor sounding like it’s working harder than normal
