IT’S SUCH AN EXCITING TIME OF THE YEAR!

It’s time to plant all the trees! 🌲

Well, not all the trees - but some of the fun ones that are only best planted in the cool months of the year.

In a warm climate, planting young trees in the winter months gives them a chance to overcome the shock of being transplanted and set roots in spring, before the really hot weather sets in.

Are you planning to start your fruit or berry garden this year? I can help you!

Comment NEW TREE if you would like to know more about my garden design or my downloadable fruit tree guides!

I KNOW THE PHOTOS DON’T MATCH THE DESCRIPTIONS! ☺️

I just had some lovely photos from around the garden that I really wanted to share in this post. So don’t come for me! ☺️

And then take a deep breath out, because the feeding regime is slowing down for the winter ❄️

There is significantly less fruit trees and berries to feed at the start of the dormancy period in the garden. Potted trees and berries will still need regular feeding though, so make sure to get to your potted strawberries and citrus 🍋

In winter we use pruning to drive energy into the root ball of our plants, rather than fertiliser and feed.

So take the chance to slow down, or to plant out more flower seeds ready for spring!

PRUNING IN EARLY WINTER NEEDS TO BE A LITTLE MORE CONSIDERED 🤔

This week we will be running through all the fruit trees you can plant, feed and prune in early winter. It’s an exciting week - especially for the planting! 🪏

But we are jumping into pruning straight away, as it’s often misinterpreted that winter (no matter what stage in the season) is one of the best time to prune fruit trees. And that is true, but not necessarily in early winter.

It’s important not to prune trees that can’t heal the cut during cold weather, like stonefruit. And equally important not to prune trees that will put out new growth when it could be damaged by cold weather, like citrus.

We are ramping up for the big late winter prune, so take this month to get other things done in your garden!

EVERY TREE AND GARDEN IS DIFFERENT…

But when it comes to lemon trees that are around 3+ years old, you should be able to count on a consistent supply of fruit each season.

If you’re not getting any fruit on your tree, it’s time to get in there and help it out! ⛑️

These are just 3 of the ways that have helped me increase fruit production on my lemon trees 🌳

Some of the other factors to consider are the position of the tree (full sun) and pollination (you need bees in your garden to get that job done!) 🐝

There is also another trick to fertilising that helps prevent flower or fruit drop in fruit trees. I’ll be sharing it in my newsletter on Monday, so if you’d like to receive a copy, comment NEWS below and I will send you a link to subscribe!

HOW TO ORGANICALLY FEED BACKYARD LEMON TREES (PART TWO)

Whilst my lemon tree has been neglected over the past year (😬 oops!), laying a strong foundation of trace element feeding when it was young has certainly helped it survive. But maybe not thrive 🤣🤣🤣

Now that I’m back on the case with my citrus care, these trace elements will definitely form an important part of my feeding regime.

In lifeless, bogged or sandy soil, it’s so easy for these elements to leach out. Adding them back in re-builds the soil for your lemon tree and lays the foundation for strong growth, flowering and fruit 🍋

I would love to see your lemon trees! 🌳

If you are growing a backyard lemon tree please DM me a picture by May 31st.

My favourite lemon tree will win a free copy of my lemon tree care guide - a downloadable PDF that gives you a month-to-month feeding, pruning and general care schedule for lemon trees.

THIS WEEK IT’S ALL ABOUT LEMONS! 🍋

And I don’t know that a week is long enough to give you all the information I could share about these amazing trees 🌳

Lemons - all citrus in fact - can survive neglect…to a certain extent. But like most things, if you feed it and nurture it, it will give back tenfold.

This is the feeding routine I stick to and whilst it may seem like a lot, it’s not in comparison to other citrus trees. Lemons are only moderately hungry beasts!

Want to know the secret to fertilising your lemon which is why it might be dropping its flowers?

That secret will be going out in my free e-newsletter this week. As well as my potted berry list. And early access to my mandarin guide 😮‍💨

NOW DON’T GET ME WRONG, I LOVE MY GARDEN 🪏

But as we learn we often look at back and consider what different choices we would have made 🤔

This house came with an established mandarin tree and at the time, I thought that was a great reason to establish an in ground citrus orchard 🍋

So I planted a lime, a lemon and a blood orange 🍊 as you do 😉

Would I do that again?

No.

I’ve learnt how easy and how productive citrus can be growing in pots (especially half wine barrels) and if I had my time again, I would pot them 🪴 just to save the space.

Of course that space would just be used to stick even more fruit trees in the ground, but that’s me!

So if you are looking around your small garden and thinking, “I can’t fit a single fruit tree in here”, I challenge you to pot up a lemon or an orange.

And if you’d like to learn more about how to grow and care for it, sign up to my e-newsletter for helpful hints and tips. Comment CITRUS below for the link and get a copy of my free citrus gall wasp info sheet.

IF YOU’RE A BERRY LOVER, THIS IS THE INFO FOR YOU!

I LOVE berries. There is a point each year, when I have run out of last season’s fruit, and I start visiting my berry vines and bushes daily, begging them to hurry up and grow!

As a small space gardener, I don’t have big areas that I can give up to blackberry and loganberry vines, but I can grow plenty of other berries in pots 🪴

These are the berries that I would recommend prioritising in a small space garden, simply because they will provide you with the most fruit, even in a pot.

Stay tuned in the coming weeks too, as we talk berry care and maintenance over winter! ❄️

THESE ARE MY FAVOURITES 💚

There are plenty of fruit trees that can grow productively in large pots, perfect for renters or people with a small backyard.

These are the 5 fruit trees that I’ve grown in pots the most successfully. They have some natural qualities that make them suitable for pot growing - small but productive when pruned, or can tolerate less water 💦

Over the next week we will be talking about potted fruit trees and berries and how to set yourself up for success by choosing the best varieties for this kind of planting.

I’m excited! 😜

GUS, GUSSY, G-MAN

Last night I was making plans for the urban garden for 2024 and realised that Gus is going to play a big part in its success.

I don't flash Gussy around as much as I would like to - frankly, I think you'd all be sick of looking at photos of him!

But he is my shadow in the garden and in life and deserves a little shout out.

As a 2 year old Kelpie Border Collie cross, he's more interested in playing tug and chasing a ball then he is in gardening, but he has jobs out here and thrives in feeling important and useful. If a hole needs dug for me to plant a tree, Gus is the man!

Next year he will have an even more important job - quail protector. Over autumn I'll be converting a section down the side of my house to keep quails and I will need to teach Gussy to protect them from local cats and bigger birds. Big job 😉
