200+ Year old Jarrah tree.
It's amazing what you find when you're out for a walk. This magnificent specimen is estimated to be over 200 years old.
Running a tape measure around the trunk, even though there is a large cavity as a result of losing one half (seen as the black hole), it still had a circumference of 7.5m. Jarrah dieback disease has devastating effects on our Jarrah, and Banksia woodlands, it's crucial we stay clear of infected areas to avoid transferring the disease from one place to another.
If you have Jarrah, Banksia or other suseptible species to dieback, there are steps you can take. PM us to find out how, and for more information.

PSHB - not the Russian secret Police.
Western Australia is currently under attack from a little borer, only 2mm in size. The Polyphagos Shot Hole Borer, PSHB for short, was first detected in East Fremantle, probably came over in freight. The beetle is native to Asia, but has been active in California, South Africa and Israel, with devastating consequences. There are over 100 species it's been known to attack, but Avocados are a favourite. It's not the beetle that causes the problems, it's the fusarium fungus that the beetle cultivates as a food source, that eventually kills the tree.
If you want to know more about this pest, check out the DPIRD site for more information.

The photos show the tiny borer holes, and the fungus around the hole.
These particular branches were from a Poinciana.

Ever wondered what the white frosting is on your gum tree leaves?

Well, there's a tiny little creature, that lives inside the white frosting, the white frosting, and that's called a 'Lerp.' The Lerp is a protective shell under which sits the little creature, called a 'Psyllid.' The tiny insect you can see under the transparent shell in the photo, is about to emerge, and start feeding on the leaves. The sap-sucking insect can cause considerable damage if the infestation is severe.
The secretion that comes out the other end, looks like a shiny, sugary, wax type substance, called 'honeydew.' This often glistens and is sticky to touch. If you park your car underneath a tree that has an infestation of these little creatures, you'll undoubtedly find your car covered in it. If you're really unlucky, the honeydew will attract a black fungus called 'sootymould.' If it gets on your car or pavers it can leave a terrible stain.
Fortunately, there is something you can do to manage the infestation. If you're keen to find out more, please PM us or phone our office.

We're losing our green space to grey space.
The Urban Heat Island effect (UHI) is a real phenomenon, it's noticeable in the heart of most major capital cities in the world. Heavily populated areas, urban density, generally comes at a cost, we lose our trees and green spaces to make way for houses or apartments. Seen in this article, is Milan's attempt to address some of these issues.

T.hectares of grass, tree-lined skyscrapers, roof gardens, green building. For the skeptics, more than the future, certain architectures are greenwashing,

Birds are attacking my tree.

Recently, were asked to look at a Marri tree (Corymbia calophylla), that was showing signs of decline. The tree was a mature marri, that had recently lost some major limbs, and had a band of bark missing 10-12m up the trunk. Upon further investigation, a large cavity at the bottom of the tree was found, seen in the picture, with a steel probe inserted 600mm into the centre of the tree. Trees can live with cavities, it depends how deep they go.
One of the main issues, was that birds were chewing the bark, peeling it back and exposing the inner sapwood. This was drying out. With the bark peeled away, from almost 80% of the tree, the birds were effectively ringbarking the tree. Very little sustenance was able to flow up or down. Avian damage is a problem on certain trees, and normally the tree can cope. With this tree, termites, the extent of the avian damage, the tree is struggling.

If you have a tree that's facing challenges, and in poor shape, give us a call and we can take a look.
