A rainy season delight... listening to the sound of rainwater trickling down a rain chain. 🌧🎢

An ancient Japanese solution, kusari-doi rain chains are made of a series of cups that guide rainwater from a rooftop. Kusari-doi were traditionally used in temples and shrines to collect water in basins used for purification rituals and garden irrigation. As water trickles from one bowl to the next, it creates a beautiful sound while guiding the water where you want it.

Noticed swollen lumps on your citrus trees? πŸ‹πŸ§ These are galls created by the citrus gall wasp when it lays eggs inside the wood. Galls may begin appearing as early as February and will be easily detectable by June. Here's what you need to know:

βœ‚Prune out all galls before 30 June to avoid the need to treat before disposal. The larvae inside the galls will not survive when pruned now, and pruned material can go into green waste.

βœ‚After 30 June, you will need to treat any new galls that you prune by solarising, shredding or burning.

βœ‚No need to prune out old galls (they will have holes in them) as the adults have already emerged.

πŸ“… Mark it in your calendar: spring is the best time to spray your citrus with Kaolin clay (a natural clay that deters citrus gall wasps from laying their eggs). We sell a couple of Kaolin clay products in store.

What your un**es look like after a month in the worm farm and all the organic material has been eaten! 🀭 πŸͺ±

Yes it's true, you can put clothes, rags and fabrics made from natural fibres in your worm farm and the little champions will process all the organic parts. Such an awesome way to keep resources out of landfill, and return them to the earth!

Get a last minute garlic crop in this weekend to harvest before Xmas! πŸ§„

Step 1. Grab some spray free/organic garlic from Urban Revolution 😁
Step 2. W**d and prepare your garden bed for planting. Mark planting homes about 10-15 cm apart.
Step 3. Break bulb into cloves.
Step 4. Plant clove pointy side up.
Step 5. Add some kelp powder (also from Urban Revolution). Can dilute to make liquid, or just sprinkle the powder and let the rain do the job of watering in.
Step 6. Throw in some radish seeds - these can be harvested in 6 weeks, well before the garlic needs the room to grow (and will satisfy the impatient gardeners among us while we wait for the garlic to grow)
Step 7. Mulch well and make a cuppa to celebrate a job well done! πŸ‘πŸ»

The cooler, wetter days in June and July mark the Noongar season of Makuru – a lovely time of year for Perth veggie gardeners πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎπŸŒ±

Soil temperatures are still warm enough to suit a large range of seeds, and with rain falling more regularly, it's a great time to sow new crops.

Plant your favourite brassicas such as kale, mustard, rocket and spinach. Now is also a great time for stars like brown onions, rhubarb, peas and shallots . πŸ₯¬πŸ₯¦

Don’t forget to get your seed potatoes as well! πŸ₯”

And stock up on herb seeds that thrive in the cooler weather like chives, coriander, dill, cress and mint. Edible flowers like alyssum, calendula and cornflower will also do well this time of year. 🌿

Go wild with native everlasting daisy seeds in any empty spots in your garden or verge 🌸

It's the perfect time to plant trees and natives (hello verge project?!) 🌳

Want help selecting your seeds? Order our Makuru Seasonal Seed Packs and our team will hand-select a range of veg, herbs and flower seeds perfect for sowing now.

Or pop into our store at The Carlisle Collective and chat with our team while browsing our heirloom seed library. Open Thursdays - Sundays or online anytime πŸ‘‹πŸ˜

Dealing with pests in your garden? Try throwing them off the scent with companion planting techniques. A great natural approach that strengthens your garden's resilience without relying on any toxic chemicals.

'Pests’ recognise their food by shape or scent. Gardens with straight, neat, weedless rows are like supermarkets to them: they easily wander up and down taking a bit of this and a bit of that.

Designing a garden that confuses β€˜pests’ can reduce their impact without using toxic chemicals. Here’s how...

πŸ› Don't plant your food in straight rows. Stagger and interplant instead.
πŸ› Mix plantings up so you don't have blocks of any one shape or scent that are similar.
πŸ› Plant flowers among your vegetables and plant vegetables among your flowers.
πŸ› Plant strong smelling herbs like rosemary, sage and lavender nearby veggie patches.

A community favourite, back in stock πŸ’š If you have sensitive skin and find most soaps too drying or irritating, we recommend giving it a go.

What the Urban Rev community is saying about Lorbeer Soap:

"This is my favourite soap, I just love it. It keeps your skin soft and moisturised plus the bonus of washing your hair. Highly recommend." - Maureen

"Most soaps are too drying for my sensitive skin but the Lorbeer Aleppo soap is beautiful. I also used it on my hair and was surprised to find my hair was shiny and I experienced no itchy scalp. This soap is great for the whole family!" - Gabby

"I suffer from psoriasis and struggle to find a body soap that doesn’t make it flare up. This soap is so soothing and good for my skin and it lasts a long time." - Jason

"I was looking for a new shampoo soap so decided to give this a go. It's very good, left my hair feeling amazing and no residue. The massive block of soap is going to last for ages so great value too." - Anne-Marie

Embrace diversity and collaboration in your garden! Discover how to use companion planting and plant guild design to help your garden flourish πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎπŸŒΈπŸŒΏ

Join us at this fun and empowering workshop. Held in a private urban permaculture garden in Kensington, you'll have the chance to see the principles of companion planting in action while you learn. There'll be nibbles and something refreshing to sip on. It's always a lovely time of learning, knowledge-sharing and connection with other gardeners.

What previous participants had to say:
"Bec is a brilliant presenter and the content was soooo interesting! Plus the beautiful garden setting made it extra special!"

"A wealth of well presented information easily converted to practical application.
It is one thing to take notes but walking around a garden only 5 years old, proved what can be achieved. Will highly recommend this workshop, you will not be disappointed."

Tickets via our website (link in first comment) ✨

Town of Vic Park residents can attend for $5 – see more info on our website.
