Effective noise control relies on four principles: Mass, Damping, Decoupling, and Absorption.

Mass adds heavy materials, making it harder for sound to vibrate the wall. Decoupling mechanically separates the wall from the structure, preventing vibrations from travelling. Damping uses compounds that convert sound vibration into heat. Airtightness ensures a hermetic seal so airborne sound can't leak through.

True soundproofing requires precision. Small installation mistakes can lead to total system failure.

Resilient channels have a 90% failure rate in DIY installs. One screw too long creates a bridge for vibration. The entire wall becomes useless.

Sound is like water. It finds the path of least resistance. Gaps around power points, switch boxes, or vents let noise flank around your soundproofing. Adding plasterboard without proper damping can create resonance that amplifies bass sounds.

The internet loves a cheap fix. Unfortunately, physics doesn't offer discounts.

Egg cartons? Lightweight and porous. Virtually no mass to block noise. They're rubbish.

Carpets and curtains? They reduce echo. They don't prevent sound from passing through walls or windows.

"Soundproof" paint? A millimetre-thick coating cannot block the same energy as plasterboard or mass-loaded vinyl. It's physically impossible.

You've had enough of the noise.

The neighbour's music through the wall. Traffic rumbling past your window. So you search online, find acoustic foam panels, stick them up, and wait for the silence.

Nothing changes. The noise is still there.

Acoustic foam absorbs echoes in a room. It doesn't stop sound from travelling through walls. Foam is lightweight with no mass. Sound waves pass straight through it. To actually block noise, you need heavy, dense materials that physically obstruct the energy of the sound wave.
