Today is R U OK? Day.
We've had the doors open since the 80s, and in that time we've learned that the bloke in at 6:30am for knee pads and a tube of adhesive doesn't always say a lot. But "how are you travelling?" still goes a long way.
The trades are hard on the body and harder on the head — long days, tight deadlines, quotes that don't stack up, jobs that fall over. Most of it gets carried quietly.
So today we're checking in. With our team behind the counter, and with every tradie who walks through our doors. If you're in store, we've got time for a yarn.
Four steps, that's the whole thing:
1️⃣ Ask — "How are you travelling, mate?"
2️⃣ Listen — no fixing, just hear them out
3️⃣ Encourage action — "What might help you get through?"
4️⃣ Check in — follow up in a week or two
And if the answer isn't a good one, you don't need to have all the answers yourself. You just need to stay in the conversation.
