🖤 Burn it to make it stronger.

It sounds completely backwards, but that’s exactly how Shou Sugi Ban was born.

For hundreds of years, Japanese craftsmen have been carefully charring timber to create one of the most beautiful and durable cladding finishes in the world.

The fire transforms the surface, creating a protective carbon layer that helps resist weather, moisture, insects, and decay while producing those incredible deep black tones and unique textures.

No two boards are ever quite the same.

It’s raw.
It’s natural.
It’s dramatic.
And somehow it manages to feel both ancient and incredibly modern at the same time.

When done properly, Shou Sugi Ban isn’t just a finish—it’s a statement.

A reminder that sometimes the things that endure the fire become stronger, more resilient, and more beautiful because of it.

🔥 It says a lot about how we like to do things.

✅ Thermally broken, double glazed windows with low-energy glass

✅ Solid polyurethane wall insulation and to underfloor and ceiling spaces

✅ Fibre cement sheet wall and ceiling linings

✅ Copper, not plastic, piping for all in-wall plumbing pipework

✅ Painted or laminate finish to cabinets with silica-free stone benchtops

✅ Karndeen or equivalent flooring

✅ Air-conditioning and ceiling fans

✅ Security screens

✅ Heat recovery system (container homes)

✅ Heat pump hot water system

What’s more, all our homes meet National Construction Codes, Energy ratings and Australian Standards 💪

And as a registered builder we take responsibility for the entire process from start to finish, including on site connections and installation (we also sell the homes for owner builder install).

We have strived to create a range of healthy, well insulated and ventilated living spaces, made beautifully.

Far from a masterpiece, but it’s written - nearly 30,000 words, some of them potentially informative and meaningful 🤣

My first book all about small homes / granny flat / container home design and building, what to look out for, what’s good, bad and potholes to avoid along the way. Now I just need to make it look pretty and have it ready for a free download…give me a fortnight!

The second book is on its way too (I started it before getting sidetracked and writing this one), all about renovating.

Both will be a free download on the website and coming soon.

Message if you want a free copy before it goes online😁

Thanks to my beautiful wife and gorgeous daughter for putting up with ‘yet another project’ amidst some busy times…without your support it would not have been written 🙏❤️

Our latest ’Fonzy Flat’, more commonly known as an above-garage ‘granny flat’.

A huge thanks to the clients for entrusting us with their new addition and to the team who delivered a wonderful project.

The interior ceiling is quite special and access to the laneway doesn’t just have to be ‘just’ a gate! 😁

Not my usual type of ‘post’ but I thought I’d put it out there as a reminder for all of us to take a step back and remember what’s important in life.

The building industry is stressful and frustrating; period, but the right mindset can make a big difference on how we tackle our days and on how we feel when we get home to our families and friends.☺️

Look at the difference between clear glass and Low-E (low energy) glass!

This is why we love thermally-broken window frames!
