During winter roses go into hibernation and naturally stop producing new growth. This is the time to prune as they are less likely to suffer from stress or shock when they’re cut back and gives them time to adjust and prepare for the spring-summer season when they’re most active.

Pruning roses also makes them more attractive by giving them a neat, tidy appearance. An established, unpruned rose bush will still bloom, but will have a messy, unkept appearance with lots of dead material throughout.

If you've rosebushes and/or other areas of your garden that need some TLC this winter, I'm happy to help. Give me a txt or call Angus 0437 712 039.

Frangipanis are a spectacular plant. Their flowers and fragrance bring a romantic feeling to any garden, and they'll never go out of fashion because they're drought tolerant.

Winter is the time to manage and prune. Maybe you'd like to propagate some cuttings into pots for you or as gifts.

Now of course, if you'd like some help with that, and anything else in the garden while I'm there, just give me a call. Angus 0437 712 039. Servicing City Beach to Dalkeith.

Maintaining your lawn during winter in Perth is essential to keep it healthy and ready for the warmer months.

Here are 5 ways to help you care for your lawn during winter:

1. Mowing: Regular mowing is essential. Keep the blades raised to around 40 mm if your buffalo grass is planted in shaded areas. This practice also helps remove w**d seed heads, reducing future germination.

2. Fertilise Lightly: If you’ve continued your fertilising program through May, your soft leaf buffalo grass should still be lush and green. Apply a granular fertiliser with some iron content.

3. Trees and Shade Sails: Trim back or thin out trees and shrubs that create excess shade. Turf needs sunlight for photosynthesis (at least 4 hours a day for Sir Walter). Consider planting small deciduous trees that lose their leaves in winter, allowing that sunlight in.

4. Wetting Agent: Apply a wetting agent after winter rains to prevent the soil from drying out. Re-wetting hydrophobic soil can be challenging, especially with water restrictions.

5. De-compaction and Aeration: If your lawn is in heavy shade areas that struggle to dry out, break the ground open to allow water drainage. Turf needs water but dislikes having wet, soggy feet, which can lead to root rot and patchy growth. Use a garden fork to aerate the soil.
