Mother Earth Nursery Point Clare

Mother Earth Nursery Point Clare Acorn Garden Centre is now Mother Earth Nursery. Come in and see the changes The closure of the gallery made way for a quaint plant nursery and Acorn was born.

A little of Acorn History
Acorn Garden Centre has been trading at Point Clare since 1975. The large Barn-style building has an interesting past, originally built and used as a plasterboard factory. In the 70’s the building was converted and used as an art and gift gallery with some plants being grown on site and sold as well. There’s even been a fully equipped aquarium department, with over 40 fis

h tanks, featuring more than one hundred species of temperate and tropical fish. Over the years just like a growing tree Acorn became larger, spreading its branches and settling its roots deep in the local community. In 2008 new owners brought fresh ideas, high standards and progress to the nursery, rekindling the interest of local gardeners. The re-introduction of the Gift Gallery with its quirky and well presented displays has seen it become a destination of its own right. The owners and staff settled in quickly and have become greatly valued amongst the loyal patrons. In 2011 Acorn won a national online competition and was voted Austraflora Retail Garden Centre of the Year. In 2012 PlantsPlus recognized Acorn with the following awards: Highest Greenlife Sales Growth NSW and Highest Overall Growth NSW, a fantastic achievement within the 27 members of the NSW PlantsPlus group. Most recently in 2013 Acorn was placed in the top three finalists at the PlantsPlus Garden Centre of the Year NSW Awards Gala Event. Acorn has been servicing the Central Coast with plants, advice and garden supplies for over 40 years. It is an award winning business, loved by many local gardeners. We invite you to visit us and enjoy the garden centre.

Look at this amazing Fruit!
The Golden Fruit Of The Andes, also called The Nectar of the Gods!

We have been growing them in the nursery, and they have quickly become our favourite fruit!

Its botanical name is Solanum quitoense. Also referred to as the Naranjilla.

This rare South America fruit from the Andes is a wonder to behold. With fruit that are orange, leathery skinned, and a bright green refreshing pulp. Best eaten fresh, used in fresh juices, sorbets, and smoothies. They have a unique, vibrant, tart citrus-pineapple flavour. And are considered one of the best fruits for making fresh juices. The juices of which are referred to as “the nectar of the gods” in Columbia and Ecuador.

These plants are related to eggplants and tomatoes, featuring large, velvety purple-tinged leaves with a dramatic, tropical appearance. They need to be protected from frosts. And will grow 1-3m tall. They can be pruned to keep them shorter. And thrive in part shade, dappled shade, or morning sun.

You have got to try growing one! They are super productive once they get going. Have you got a spot for one of these unusual and tasty fruit?
We have them available in the nursery, or on our web page to post further afield.

Take a look at these two Night Blooming Waterlilies that are in flower in the nursery now. Did you know you have day blooming and night blooming Waterlilies?
These night bloomers open from around 4pm in the afternoon and close the next morning around 10am. Perfect for ponds and water bowls. And a better choice for those of us who have busy day jobs. We get to enjoy them of an evening, and in the early morning before the day blooming Waterlilies wake and open for the day.

What an unfortunate name!
Bonking Grass!

This wonderful Australian Native is commonly called Bonking Grass. It’s Latin name is Goodenia radicans. Or formally Selliera radicans before its name change!

This plant is an Australian and New Zealand native. Named after the secluded and private areas in bushland and coastal areas where this plant can be found. Positions often favoured by couples seeking a private spot. 😂🤭

Despite its unfortunate name. It is a wonderful plant. Bonking grass is a hardy native. Easy to grow, particularly in damp positions in full sun or part shade. It can also be grown in boggy positions or as a water plant.

Growing approx 5-15cm tall and up to 1m wide. It makes a fantastic w**d suppressing ground cover in the garden under normal / general garden conditions. And is a wonderful cascading plant when used in a pot, raised garden bed, or as a hanging basket plant. Its leaves naturally turn upwards as its stems cascade. Creating a very interesting visual effect. Pure white flowers adorn this plant en mass through spring and summer.

Bonking grass is also salt tolerant plant and is a fantastic option for coastal gardens.

We have this wonderful plant available in the nursery or on our webpage for postage further afield.

Have you got a spot for one of these unusual native plants?

Our favourite Hedgehog Sage are Back!!!

Hedgehog Sage named after its seed heads, or also called Blue Witched Hat is a fantastic shrub for full sun or part shade. This wonderful shrub hails from South Africa. And is in the salvia family. One of the toughest plants when established. Its breathtaking blue flowers are produced for months! Starting in Autumn and continuing through into January! It wont be long before they start their Autumn flowering season!

Do you need a splash of colour for Autumn and winter?
One of these will give you many months of colour. We have a few early plants hitting the nursery later this week. They won’t last long. Available in the nursery (this weekend) or bags one early for pickup or postage on our webpage. So get in quick!

We’re really excited to share this plant with our native plant lovers!

Viola hederacea Violet Whispers.

This little gem is a purple coloured form of the traditional native violet. We named her Violet Whispers for a reason.
Early in the morning, at the nursery, the whisper of a light breeze stirs her flowers as it shifts the mist. And her little violet flowers sway and move on the breeze. Almost like they are whispering secrets to each other! And so we named her Violet Whispers.

We found this little beauty among a batch of traditional Viola hederacea in white and purple. Perhaps a chance seedling that has come out violet and purple. She stood out like a sore thumb. And what a delicate beauty she is. We have since divided and propagated her. And are ready to let a few of this beautiful violet go to new forever homes.

Treat her just like you would a traditional native violet. A wonderful w**d suppressing ground cover in the garden. Or perfect for spilling over pots or retaining walls. She loves part sun to full sun. And is tolerant of a wide range of soils and conditions. Nice and hardy too!

We’re sure she will be as much of a joy for you as she has been for us! You will find her in the nursery, and on our web page for postage. Have you got a home for one of these lovely violets?
