Tips from B.A.Q Lawn Care Services: Top Soiling 🪏

What top soiling does

✅Improves the lawn’s soil profile so roots can grow deeper and handle heat and drought better.
✅Levels minor humps and hollows and helps thicken thin or patchy grass when combined with seed or fertiliser

When to top soil

✅Best done in the active growing seasons, typically spring or early autumn, so the grass grows up through the new layer quickly
Particularly useful if the lawn is uneven, has thin spots, or the soil is very sandy and dries out fast, which is common in Perth

What mix to use

✅For most established lawns, use a sandy loam blend: sand/loam/compost mix is widely recommended for improving soil while still draining well

✅For levelling only, a washed or screened sand is often preferred because it spreads and levels easily and is less likely to crust and become water‑repellent

How to apply it

✅Mow and lightly rake first to remove debris and thatch so the material can get down to the soil surface.

✅Spread no more than about 1 cm over the grass at a time, then work it in with the back of a rake or level‑lute so you can still see the grass tips; burying the blades can cause die‑off.

After-care

✅Water lightly but frequently at first to settle the mix and help the lawn push new growth through the layer

✅If you are also reseeding thin areas, keep the surface moist (often daily light watering) until new seedlings are established, then gradually reduce frequency
