I never thought bugs were on my bingo card but here we are! I’m new to isopod keeping - about six months ago I got a few different species from my friend Ruby at Bug Frenzy and I have been hooked ever since. Recently I found the mother lode of isopods while visiting my brother in the Dandenong Ranges. He was very happy for me to take some home. His wife was happier.
I am using an Exo Terra Faunarium, which is nice and clear so it’s easy to see what’s happening inside.
I’ve started with a base layer of lava stones to aid drainage and topped that with vermiculite for water retention. You could also use sphagnum moss. On top of that is an organic and fertiliser free soil mix. No nasties.
I have plants on the end that will stay moist and at the other end I’ve added grape leaves, clean rot wood and bark from where I found them.
Springtails will help to keep the enclosure clean and healthy and the eggshells provide a source of calcium.
To be honest I’m not sure how well the plants will cope but it’s all part of learning right?

I don’t think we’ve ever had so many minis ever at Botanista! This is just a small portion of the gorgeous porcelain minis we’ve unpacked. If you’re looking for something weird or oddly specific for your terrarium or fairy garden, chances are we’ve got it!

Last week was another flying visit to my brother who lives in the Dandenong Ranges. Of course I made him take me to the forest for a walk and gawk at fungi. We weren’t expecting to find the magical lyrebird tree though! See if you can also spot the wallaby that watched us watching the lyrebird!
Also if you’re ever in the Dandenong Ranges and want to try the best croissants outside of France you need to look up my brother’s bakery The Ridge Bakery. Tell him I sent you. The seedy ones are the best - you can thank me later

Jumping spider workshops are back! Together with me you’ll create a bio active enclosure using living plants. Our local bug breeder and wildlife expert Cory will talk you through spider care and bring a variety of jumping spiders on the day. So you’ll leave with a new pet and a beautiful living enclosure! Our first class will be October 10 at Botanista. All details are on our website, or message us if you need a link!

Our tree has her favourite companion back🐦‍⬛ Ravens are back in store (made from resin - just to be clear)!

Springtails! Amazing little crustaceans that help to keep our terrariums clean and mould free. About six months ago I started to create cultures of white tropical springtails for our use and to have them available for customers, too. This was the start of my fascination with springtails and now I’ll hooked. I’ve also now got an excellent stable culture of tropical red springtails that will soon be available for your terrariums. If you can’t get into our store we will have them online for delivery in about two week’s time.
Now don’t get me started on isopods… I’ll save that new obsession for another day.

We held our first lamp terrarium workshop yesterday! What a wonderful bunch of people turned up to play. I was having so much fun that I forgot to take a stack of photos so made Jess here stay back so I could get a few quick pics. The wonderful Aimee who was also at the workshop took a couple of photos of me with her Polaroid. Thank you Aimee!
If you’re upset at missing out you can join our next class, it’s on Saturday 3 October at Botanista 💚
