Our Story

First grown by Katie Graham and now flourishing in Australian homes everywhere, The Family Love Tree draws on the energy and ingenuity that rushes around this eclectic and creative city, but with a peaceful and seductive tone that comes from our love for all things lush, loose and harmonious.

We support Slow Fashion by respecting the traditional craftsmanship of producing rattan furniture and homewares. This incredible skill has been perfected and handed down through generations. By acknowledging true craftsmanship in this fast waste, fast-fashion world, we celebrate and value these skills. We’re restoring handmade craft traditions that are as old as time. We manufacture small quantities of furniture at one time, to avoid potential waste.

The rattan used in our handwoven pieces comes from the liana plant. It’s a sustainable material that roots itself in the soil and grows up to 100 meters high on to trees in the rainforest. The residents who live near the rainforest are employed to harvest the rattan liana carefully by hand, leaving the surrounding rainforest intact. After collecting the long branches, the top shoot of the liana is planted back into the ground so the growing process can start again.

By never mass producing, we ensure the quality of our products and support skilled villagers, whose main income source relies on the manufacturing of rattan products. Rattan grows all year round and provides an alternative to logging and can help protect the area’s forests. With the negative impact of deforestation, rattan planting and harvesting is one of the best ways to restore decreasing populations of trees and forests.
