Doors are useful things.
We like them. We have plenty at home.

They let people in, they keep the worst of the weather out. But doors are also one of the most common places for draughts to sneak into a home.

The problem is that not all door draughts are the same.
A gap under a timber front door needs a completely different fix from the side of an aluminium sliding door. French doors have their own little circus and cavity sliding doors laugh in the thought of any kind of ‘standard’ (to be fair, so do timber sliding doors!).

So before you buy a door seal, work out what kind of door you have, and which part of it is leaking. I don't have to tell you, you already know we don't like generic weather stripping. Nothing to do with its 'face', we just think that it's lying on its CV.
It's just a bit unrealistic to expect it to fit and work properly in all situations, and we don't think it does, at least not to the standards we like to seal our draughts.

That's why we have created different kits for different doors. Not to over-complicate things, not to make installation longer, not because we enjoy having trouble shipping over-sized seals. It was because we wanted seals that worked well, did what it said on the label, and that wouldn't impact the opening of those door we like so much. Oh, and we wanted to have a home that wasn't freezing in winter (and stinking hot in summer) while overpaying our energy bills. That too.

It's cold outside, especially at night. A lot of homes are running the heater hard and still layering up. 🌬😵

A screen door is a wonderful thing. It lets in fresh air, keeps out flies, and gives you that satisfying little clack when it closes. A Draught Dodger is also a wonderful thing. It helps seal the variable gaps around your door so cold (or hot) air stops sneaking in like an uninvited relative. Do they actually go together? It's a fair question.Just like you might or might not get along with your next door neighbour, it depends.

Draught Dodgers and screen doors could either get along very well and often have each other over for dinner, or they could try to throw hands every time they meet (aka you try to close the door). 

Like with all guests with big personalities, you need to check whether there is enough space between them. Despite their many good qualities, they still have to obey the laws of physics.  And physics, regrettably, does not care how much you wanted this to be easier.

Speaking of complications... What to do if your door gaps are wonky? How do you measure a gap that you can't see?! How much space do these two need? What to do if they really don't have enough?

Condensation and mould are often a symptom of poor indoor air quality. This problem seems to have spiked this winter more than any other year, particularly in cooler climates, like Melbourne's.

Condensation on windows can be caused by many things: too much indoor moisture, not enough extraction, not enough planned ventilation, cold glass, poor insulation, and it keeps going. Whether this has already caused a mould issue on your windows or not, it is best to approach the problem before it gets out of hand.

Unfortunately, it's not a matter of "cleaning better". It's more about reduce moisture, improve ventilation, warm cold surfaces, fix condensation, stop uncontrolled leaks.

It's back. The Aussie stereotype of adding layers to stay indoors is back and it's going to stay like that for a few months. 

Are you fed up with that cold breeze sneaking in and making your home feel more like a wind tunnel than a cosy retreat? Are you tired of watching your energy bills soar while your comfort takes a nosedive?

A handy technique to make your winter bills a little more manageable is pre-heating: the practice of warming your home during off-peak electrical hours, typically when energy demand and costs are lower.

To maximise the benefits of pre-heating, it's essential to ensure your home is well-insulated and free from draughts. Whilst we do have page for all of those who don't know where to start with their draught proofing, generally, your doors are a pretty safe bet.

Now run your finger, a white cloth, or a damp tissue around the inside edge of the door jamb - especially down the sides, across the top, and along the bottom corners. Go on. We’ll wait. We have all had door snakes. Most Australian houses have had at least one door snake at some point. They tend to appear in winter, full of promise, like a little fabric sausage sent to save the household from the cold.

Sometimes they are homemade. Sometimes they are from the hardware store. Sometimes they are vaguely decorative and match the curtains. Sometimes they are deeply ugly, but have been in the family so long nobody has the heart to get rid of them.

And look, we are not here to start a fight with your door snake.  If you love it, keep it. Give it a name. Let it have its moment. But please don’t ask it to do the job of a proper door seal.

It's a bit unfair. A door snake can help with one very specific problem. If cold air is coming directly under the bottom of the door, and the door snake is sitting neatly in exactly the right spot, and nobody opens the door, and the floor is nice and even, and the snake is plump enough to cover the gap, then yes, it can help.

There are simple checks that help you choose the right draught proofing solution the first time. 👆

Before you buy a door seal, please do one thing. Please do not guess. We know. Very bossy of us. 🙏

But door gaps can look simple from across the room and then turn into a full-blown mystery once you get up close.  A door might be tight at the top, gappy at the bottom, wider on the latch side, weird near the hinge, and doing something completely unhelpful in the bottom corner.

Which is exactly why one-size-fits-all door sealing so often becomes one-size-fits-nothing.
