Last month we spotted the grubs and got them under control! 🐛

Now it’s time to repair the damage and bring your lawn back to life 🌱

For Canberra Blend, late Feb to April is the ideal window, so now is the perfect time to get started. 👌

1️⃣ Remove dead or damaged grass by raking or scarifying.

2️⃣ Mow any healthy existing lawn to around 40mm.

3️⃣ Aerate to relieve compaction and help new, delicate grass seedling roots grow deeper.

4️⃣ Apply soil amendments (based on soil pH test and jar test). For example, Gypsum if you have a high clay soil.

5️⃣ Top dress with a quality sandy loam.

6️⃣ Rake shallow furrows into the top dress material.

7️⃣ Sow new seed. Don't be shy. Apply 5kg's per 100m2 of Canberra Blend seed (Tall Fescue/Kentucky Bluegrass mix).

8️⃣ Use a roller to help push the seed into the soil. If you don't have a roller, you can lightly rake the opposite direction. Both will work.

9️⃣ Water consistently to keep the seed moist until germination. Avoid pooling or runoff.

Pro tips 🧑‍🌾
• Apply a granular wetting agent after seeding.
• If birds or rabbits are eating your seed, you can cover it with a geofabric material (weetmat) to allow it to germinate. Once it has germinated, remove the cover straight away.

Time for the reveal! 👀

A big thanks to the lawn lovers who shared their guesses on this previous post, it was great to see you jump in. 👏

Here’s what was actually going on and the fix that got this lawn back on track. 👇

❌ Poor soil preparation – the turf had been laid over builders rubble, with bricks and debris found underneath.
❌ Ineffective watering system
❌ Lawn grubs

Ultimately, the decision was made to start fresh by cultivating and improving the soil, then re-turfing for a proper, long-term result! 🌱

Did you know that choosing the right grass for your sun levels makes all the difference. 🤔

🌤 Partial shade
- Buffalo like Sir Walter
- Zoysia like Sir Grange

☀️ Full sun
- Kikuyu
- Couch like Santa Ana

🌳 Shade tolerant
- Tall Fescue like Canberra Blend
- Perennial Rye

We’ve got a new guide coming out soon to help you decide, so keep your eyes peeled! 👀

Got a lawn that’s patchy, yellow, or just… sad? 🥲

Here’s a beginner-friendly 5 step process to get you started. 👇

1️⃣ Identify your grass type, this helps you know what it needs! Send us a DM or drop a comment if you need a hand. 🌱

2️⃣ Clear things out, removing weeds by hand or with a small rake. Rake up dead leaves so the sunlight can reach your grass. 🌞

3️⃣ Aerate using a hand aerator or garden fork to loosen compacted soil. This helps water, nutrients, and air reach the roots. 💧

4️⃣ Overseed, filling in bare patches with grass seed suited to your lawn type. This helps thicken the lawn and cover problem spots. 🙌

5️⃣ Feed your lawn using a liquid fertiliser or seaweed extract to boost growth, strengthen roots, and improve stress tolerance. 💪

Let us know if you'd like us to go into more detail on any of these steps! 😊

Canberra Blend ➡️ TifTuf

This conversion was all about building a beautiful lawn, from the ground up. With grub damage and thinning turf, it needed more than just a surface fix. 🐛

We rotary hoed and cleared everything out, then took the time to get the soil health where we wanted it before laying down fresh turf supplied by Rivturf and Lawn Solutions Australia 🌱

Now it’s about choosing the right treatment for the time of year, especially late in the season. ✅

Here’s what actually works:

🌱 Beneficial nematodes
A natural, living control that targets grubs in the soil.
Pet and pollinator friendly with no chemical residues. Best applied when soil is moist and temps are still warm.

🛡️ Acelepryn (chlorantraniliprole)
A selective insecticide with very low toxicity to bees, birds and pets, and minimal impact on soil life. For late-season control, use the higher label rate to target active larvae.

⚠️ Bifenthrin
Broad-spectrum and kills almost everything, including beneficial insects. A last resort only and generally not recommended.

Important:
Late-season treatments won’t bring dead roots back. They simply stop further damage and give your lawn a chance to recover.

Stay tuned for advice on how to repair those bare patches once the grubs are sorted. 👉

No amount of watering will save your lawn if the roots are already gone. ❌

If your lawn is dying off in summer but you’re still watering, lawn grubs could be the real problem. 😅

African Black Beetle larvae chew through roots earlier in the season. When the heat hits, your lawn can’t access water, so it dries out fast and bare patches show up. 🪲

How to check for grubs. 👇

Lift the edge of a dead patch. If it peels back easily and you spot white, C-shaped larvae in the soil, you’ve found the culprit. 👀

Next up, the best way to treat them! 🌱
