Tip for the week. Sandpaper. They are all different. The best all-round sandpaper is the light grey 120 grit on a roll. And keep your used sandpaper. It is perfect for a quick scuff over your frames etc before enamelling. Yeah, sanding is a pain but it is the difference between a smooth wall and a gravel road.

Tip of the week: If you are going to tackle the job on your own, don't skimp on tools. Don't buy that pack of 10 brushes for $20. Part of the reason people find it hard to paint is the brushes they use. A half-decent Monarch brush or I even use Unipro brushes, will only set you back around $10 and if you wash it after use it can last the whole job. Same goes for your rollers. If you buy one of those black roller trays with the little handle and sleeve already in it for around $10, it will cost you in time and quality. You are paying $60+ for 4 litres of paint you may as well pay an extra couple of dollars to get it on your wall efficiently.

Today's tip: Stir the paint. Sounds obvious... it's not as obvious as you think. Check it for colour and sheen before using.

Today's tip for painting: If you are painting over enamel you have to undercoat the old enamel with an oil-based undercoat. You can use either oil-based primer undercoat or the quick-dry oil-based primer undercoat. NOT waterbased undercoat.
You cannot paint straight over the top of enamel... well, you can, but it might just fall off again within a year because it won't bond to the enamel.
Once you have undercoated your doors or frames with the oil-based undercoat, then you can enamel with either oil-based or water-based enamel.
And, yes. You still have to sand it first.

Here is the final product. Only the surround for the fireplace and it's done. But my job is complete.
