Just framed, not yet unwrapped!

This needlepoint design is inspired by a highly decorative tiled panel at the entrance to Abd-al Aziz Khan Madrassa (1652): a beautiful unrestored madrassa (college for students) in the heart of Bukhara’s old town, Uzbekistan.

It will be featured in my upcoming exhibition ‘Living Ornament’, opening 25 July at Gallery76, Concord West, Sydney.

This site is featured in my latest book, Chok: Uzbek Architecture in Needlepoint, available from my website.

Preparations are well underway for an exciting new exhibition in Sydney!

Come and see a whole lot of new needlepoint works inspired by decorative Islamic tiles from my travels in Uzbekistan, UAE, Morocco and Turkey.

This includes my new series of embroidered photographs that add context and humanity to the show.

A program of in-gallery events and activities too!

At Gallery 76, Concord West.

Fronts and backs from my new series of 8 stitched photographs of people in Uzbekistan.

Stitching just a figure in a photograph creates an interesting abstract figure in the rear of each piece.

Working with a photo I took at Hazri Imam complex, in Uzbekistan’s capital, Tashkent, and creating another in my series of stitched photographs.

The Hazri Imam complex is immense. It’s an enormous architectural square in the old part of the city and is extremely significant. Intricate tile work and architecture reflect Persian, Turkic and Mongol traditions. But in my series of stitched photos I shine a stitched spotlight on the people of Uzbekistan, featuring them in the black and white backdrops of these significant architectural settings.
