WITHANIA Withania somnifera

Also known as Ashwaganda. Highly regarded Ayurvedic medicinal plant. The dried root is a sedating tonic to relax, cope with stress and sleep better. Likes a protected, sunny position.Grows to a height of 0.75m with a spread of 0.75m. A tropical evergreen shrub, the flowers are small, green and bell-shaped. The ripe fruit is orange-red.

SWEET FLAG Acorus calamus
A perennial water plant that has bright green strappy leaves up to 1 metre with tiny yellow/brown flowers.
The leaves and roots are sweet, lemon scented and can be used in potpourri, fragrant oils and insect repellent. Should not be taken internally as Sweet flag is listed as a carcinogenic.

MEADOWSWEET Filipendula ulmaria
Meadowsweet likes humus rich soil in a shady position. Is a perennial that can be grown in a pond, with the pot under water for about 5 centimetres, otherwise keep damp.
Leaves and flowers can be drunk as a tea to aid digestion and for heartburn and dyspepsia. Can also be taken as a tea for rheumatism of the muscles and joints and for diarrhoea especially in children.

SOAPWORT Saponaria officinalis
Perennial herb with dark green leaves and beautiful clusters of scented pink flowers in summer and autumn. Will grow in most soils dry or damp.
Soapwort contains saponins and is used for cleaning delicate fabrics. Also can be used as a shampoo or in the bath especially for people with sensitive skin. To use chop and simmer in water for 5 minutes and strain. Solution can be stored in the fridge for several days. Leaves and roots can be used. Not to be taken internally as saponins can be poisonous.

VIETNAMESE MINT/LAKSA LEAF Persicaria odorata
Perennial with attractive reddish-brown markings on the leaves and has small pink flowers in later summer. Will grow in most soils as long as the soil is wet. Will grow vigorously in a large pot in a pond.
Has a pungent scent with the leaves having a peppery taste. Use sparingly in hot and cold dishes such as noodles and spicy dishes. Goes well with chicken.

A perennial water plant with a strong celery flavour. Has variegated pink and green celery like leaves with tiny white flowers. Best grown in water in a sunny to partial shade position. The white roots of the plant can also be eaten. Good in salads and as a vegetable.

SWAMP PENNYWORT/GOTU KOLA Centella asiatica
Grows best in moist conditions in a partly shaded area but will also tolerate dry periods
Medicinally used for skin complaints, accelerating healing and reduces the formation of scar tissue. Taken internally for the pain of arthritis and to reduce inflammation. Do not take if on blood thinners or have high blood pressure.
