Revitalizing History: The Transformation of Nagambie Primary School.
Nagambie Primary School, one of Victoria’s oldest public institutions, has stood as a cornerstone of education for over 150 years. As the school’s student population grew, so too did the need for modernization. This blend of rich history and forward-thinking design led to an exciting project by James Seymour Architecture, commissioned by the Victorian School Building Authority, to refresh the school’s learning environment while preserving its historical charm.
A key element of the project is the new Learning Base building, which seamlessly links to the existing school structure. The architectural layout was thoughtfully designed to create a hub for both indoor and outdoor learning experiences. Between the two buildings, a new outdoor playing area and performance space were added, complete with bleacher seats that transform the area into an impromptu stage. This outdoor space also features undercover learning areas, providing shelter and flexibility for various activities, regardless of weather. The outdoor space has become a central feature of the school, offering students and teachers the chance to learn and collaborate in an open-air environment, whether through formal lessons or informal play.
Incorporating intimate, quiet spaces into the design was also a priority. The new library building provides dedicated nooks and reading areas, offering students a cozy, focused environment to dive into their studies. The library’s design was created to foster a sense of tranquility, while its proximity to the outdoor learning spaces ensures that students are always connected to the larger community environment. A shaded outdoor structure in front of the library provides yet another dynamic learning space. When the sliding doors of the library are opened, students and teachers alike can seamlessly transition from the indoor to the outdoor environment, creating a fluid connection between the two areas. This encourages spontaneous learning experiences, whether it’s an impromptu lesson, group project, or simply a quiet moment of reflection in nature.
