๐ŸŒฟ Big Pruning Job Today! โœ‚๏ธ
Today was one of those well overdue hedge jobs โ€” several Lilly Pillies and shrubs that had really taken off and gotten a bit out of control!
This wasnโ€™t a light tidy-upโ€ฆ this was a proper cut back. The Lilly Pillies had grown tall, wide and leggy, so they were reduced in height and pulled back hard to bring them back into shape and make the hedge manageable again. They might look a bit bare straight after a prune like this, but Lilly Pillies are tough plants and respond very well once they push their new growth.
By cutting them back firmly you: โ€ข reset the height
โ€ข encourage thick new shoots
โ€ข remove old woody growth
โ€ข bring the hedge back to a neat screening plant again

Ive just popped into check on the Wilmot Road Primary School veggie garden where I volunteer my time.

๐Ÿ’ง Water Early, Grow Strong ๐ŸŒฑ

With these hot days rolling in, one of the best things you can do for your veggie patch is water early in the morning โ€“ before the real heat kicks in.

Early watering allows moisture to soak deep into the soil where the roots need it most, instead of evaporating straight off in the sun. It also helps plants handle the heat better through the day, reduces stress, and can even prevent issues like wilting and poor fruit set.

Watering early also means leaves have time to dry, which lowers the risk of disease compared to watering late in the day.

So set the alarm a little earlier, grab the hose or turn on the irrigation, and give your veggies the best start to a hot day. Your tomatoes, cucumbers, and greens will thank you! ๐ŸŒž๐Ÿฅ’๐Ÿ…

๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ… Tomato Update! ๐Ÿ…๐ŸŒฟ

My tomato plants are powering along nicely, and Iโ€™ve started getting a good little crop forming! ๐Ÿ˜
Theyโ€™re looking healthy, but still need a few things to help them grow bigger, stronger and produce better fruit.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŒพ Hereโ€™s what Iโ€™ll be doing next:
โœ” Pruning โ€“ removing some lower leaves and small side shoots to improve airflow and reduce disease.
โœ” Feeding โ€“ switching to a high-potassium fertiliser (like tomato food or liquid seaweed) every 1โ€“2 weeks to help with flower and fruit development.
โœ” Mulching โ€“ keeping the soil covered to hold moisture and protect the roots.
โœ” Watering deeply โ€“ slow, consistent watering at the base of the plant, not the leaves, to avoid fungal issues.
โœ” Supporting the branches โ€“ tying them gently to the stakes/cage as they grow so they donโ€™t snap under fruit weight.

If all goes well, weโ€™ll be eating fresh, home-grown tomatoes soon โ€” and nothing beats that! ๐Ÿ…๐Ÿ˜‹

๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ Thinning Peaches & Nectarines โ€“ Why and How ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŒฑ

Right now is the perfect time to start thinning your peach and nectarine trees. Youโ€™ll notice theyโ€™ve set a heavy crop of small fruit โ€“ while it looks great, leaving them all on the tree will actually weaken the branches and give you small, poor-quality fruit.

๐Ÿ‘‰ When to start:
As soon as the fruit is about the size of a 10โ€“20 cent coin, itโ€™s time to thin. The earlier you do it, the better the tree can put its energy into the remaining fruit.

๐Ÿ‘‰ How to thin:

Space fruit about 10โ€“15 cm apart along each branch.

Keep the strongest, best-shaped fruit and remove the extras by gently twisting them off.

If two fruit are touching, take one off so they have room to grow.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Why thin?

Bigger, sweeter, juicier fruit

Stronger branches (less chance of breakage)

Healthier tree in the long run

It can feel tough pulling off so much fruit, but think of it as trading quantity for quality. A well-thinned tree will reward you with beautiful, quality peaches and nectarines come summer. ๐Ÿ‘โœจ
