๐ฟ Plant of the Week ๐ฟ
Dianella brevicaulis โ Coast Flax Lily. ๐
Compact little 30-50cm tufted perennial that punches way above its weight. It stays green all year round, blooms blue to violet flowers from September to December, then shining purple berries that hang around for ages.
Blue-banded bees absolutely love it, wrens and thornbills come in chasing the insects, small birds shelter in the dense foliage and eat the berries, and blue tongue lizards do the same. One small plant, heaps of wildlife activity. It's basically a hub.
Sandy coastal soils are its happy place but it handles heavier soil too. Moderately drought tolerant, some waterlogging tolerance, and full sun to part shade. Can be sheared back to ground level if it needs rejuvenating and it'll bounce right back.
Works in pots, garden beds, traffic islands, green roofs โ pretty much anywhere you need something that stays reliably green and keeps working all year.
