🌿 Plant of the Week 🌿

Dianella brevicaulis — Coast Flax Lily. 💜

Compact little 30-50cm tufted perennial that punches way above its weight. It stays green all year round, blooms blue to violet flowers from September to December, then shining purple berries that hang around for ages.

Blue-banded bees absolutely love it, wrens and thornbills come in chasing the insects, small birds shelter in the dense foliage and eat the berries, and blue tongue lizards do the same. One small plant, heaps of wildlife activity. It's basically a hub.

Sandy coastal soils are its happy place but it handles heavier soil too. Moderately drought tolerant, some waterlogging tolerance, and full sun to part shade. Can be sheared back to ground level if it needs rejuvenating and it'll bounce right back.

Works in pots, garden beds, traffic islands, green roofs — pretty much anywhere you need something that stays reliably green and keeps working all year.

Fresh additions to the pots section this week and there's some good ones in there.

🌾 Gahnia radula — Thatch Saw-Sedge
A big striking sedge, 1-2m tall with long dark green leaves and dramatic black seed clusters. Loves moist poorly drained soils and rarely available commercially, so worth grabbing while you can.

🌿 Adiantum aethiopicum — Maidenhair Fern
You know this one. Delicate lacy fronds on those classic slender black stems. Loves a moist protected spot and works in pots, ferneries, indoors or out. Hard to go wrong with a Maidenhair.

🌼 Acacia pycnantha — Golden Wattle
Our national floral emblem doing what it does best. Masses of scented golden flowers from July to October, grows 3-10m, brings in the birds and handles a bit of drought once it's settled in.

🌿 Plant of the Week 🌿

This week we have chosen the Leptorhynchos squamatus, commonly known as 'Scaly Buttons'. 💛

Small, tough, and covered in cheerful little yellow button flowers. This perennial herb grows anywhere from 6 to 50cm tall and flowers for a huge chunk of the year. Ours are still going right now!

Found across Victoria, including a few scattered spots around the Peninsula. Likes well drained soil but handles moisture too. Grows best in full sun to part shade, can establish well at any time of year, and a magnet for insects.

Looks brilliant in pots or scattered through a wildflower grassland planting. The kind of plant that quietly makes everything around it look better.

🌿 Plant of the Week 🌿

Swainsona lessertifolia — Coast Swainson-pea. 💜

A tough little coastal herb that somehow manages to look absolutely stunning while growing out of sand-hummocks in full salt spray.

Grows up to 50cm tall and pumps out rich purple pea flowers from August through to January, up to 25 blooms per stem. Not fussy about when it goes in the ground either, so right now is as good a time as any.

If you've ever walked the coast and noticed a low purple haze drifting through the dunes, there's a good chance this was it.

🌿 Weekly Nursery Update 🌿

Winter is well and truly knocking. Chilly mornings have rolled in and we've had the fire going in the prop area to keep everyone warm. Plenty of rain too, so if you've been putting off planting, stop making excuses. Conditions are perfect. 🌧️🔥

It's been a big sowing week this week. Fresh trays are down and the benches are filling up fast. Here's some highlights of what we're growing:

🌾 Grasses & Sedges— Microlaena stipoides, Poa poiformis, Ficinia nodosa

🌸 Herbs & Perennials — Pelargonium australe, Arthropodium milleflorum, Brunonia australis, Bidgee-Widgee

🌳 Shrubs & Trees — Bursaria spinosa, Acacia acinacea, Leptospermum lanigerum, Eucalyptus obliqua

Retail has been restocked too. Gahnia radula, Maidenhair Fern and Golden Wattle are on the shelves. Come grab them. 🌿

🌿 Plant of the Week 🌿

Meet Poa poiformis var. ramifer, commonly known as “Dune Poa.” 🌾

This one is a genuinely rare find. A coastal tussock grass found along Victoria’s coastline, it’s most commonly spotted at Portsea, Rye, Cape Woolamai, Wilsons Prom, and Mallacoota. It’s a plant that not many people know about, and even fewer have in their gardens.

What makes this variety special is its ramifying habit, meaning it spreads and creeps in a way that sets it apart from its close relatives. It’s thought that this behaviour may be a response to its environment, a product of being partly buried by shifting coastal sands or tucked into shaded spots.

A tough, perennial tussock grass, it’s moderately salt-tolerant, rebounds after fire, and grows anywhere from 6 cm to nearly a metre tall. It’s perfect for coastal and habitat gardens, and a brilliant conversation starter for any plant nerd worth their salt. 🌊

This plant is officially classified as rare, so if you’ve been looking for something truly special for your garden, this is it.

🐸 Happy Frog Bog Friday!

Our froggy boggy section is absolutely thriving right now. Marsilea drummondii — the mythic four-leaf clover 😉, the gorgeous Goodenia radicans, and the delicate Montia australasica are all looking incredible and ready for your backyard bogs. You might just attract a Pobblebonk or Striped Marsh Frog to your garden. 🐸

The Peninsula is putting on a show this week too. Cool misty mornings are rolling in one after another, and with rain forecast for the weekend, it's about as perfect a planting window as you're going to get. Get those boots ready. 🌧️

🦅 The skies above the nursery have been anything but quiet either! Whistling Kites and Sparrowhawks have been making an absolute racket overhead this week. A little chaotic, a lot wonderful.
