Before ➝ After 🌿
A full refresh at both locations using decomposed granite for a crisp, natural finish that’s low maintenance, durable, and looks unreal — especially when paired with elements like rustic steel edging or a timber pergola.

What a year 2025 was for Wholesome Horticulture! I completed my biggest projects to date and expanded the business’s capability in hardscaping and large-scale irrigation.
Most notable projects included the Kootara Place makeover in Trevallyn, Hatherly House on High Street with Calverly Landscapes, the East Launceston Primary School oval irrigation installation, Skyline Avenue Grindelwald courtyard, and the Dandenong Road Trevallyn front yard.
All up, we installed 60 bluestone pavers, 4 boulder steps, 1 crazy-pave monolith, 2 stone walls, over 2 km of trenches, 150+ sprinklers, 100m+ of corten steel edging, and 100m³+ of mulch, as well as planting and maintaining many large hedges, trees, turf areas, and homestead gardens.
Massive thanks to my colleagues, subcontractors, and casuals: KJ landscape design, Calverly Landscapes, Petrichor Landscaping, Curwen Carpentry, AMAX Gardening, Rubera Stonemasonry, Mitchell Jones, Irribiz Launceston, Geoff Lucas, and Chris Jones. And of course, thank you to my faithful clients.
I’m currently taking bookings for 2026 and would love to work with you in the new year.
Cheers,
Simon

Here is the first before and after sequence from our current landscaping project. The linear concrete path was replaced with free form bluestone pavers and in filled with soil for later ground cover planting. It has been a joy working with these big puzzle pieces - toying with their position and orientation to reveal their best qualities.
Stay tuned for more tid bits from this project 👍👍

Welcome to winter wholesome folk! 🌬❄️
We are well into it with the solstice just 9 days away (June 22). Although it's mostly frosty or wet, the colder months are an important time to be active out in the yard. Doing some dirty work now gives your garden the best chance at bursting to life in the Spring. Indeed, there are important tasks that can only be performed in winter, mainly pruning. For inspiration, here is a simple list of winter to-do's.

June
- Create a worm farm or compost heap to repurpose garden debris such as spent summer plants, vegetable scraps, autumn leaves, and lawn clippings 🍂🪱
- pH test your lawn and garden soils. Use a calcium source such as lime to raise pH or significant organic matter to lower pH.
- Plant leafy greens and brassicas (broccoli, cabbage, kale) under a frost-proof cloche. (Beware of slugs and snails)

July
- Prune deciduous fruit trees (Except apricots!) and ornamentals for shape and structure. (Hint: Always use sharp, sterilized pruning equipment and start with the 5 D's of pruning)
- Protect your soil from the impact of heavy rains by laying mulch over garden beds.
- Sow your garlic 🧄

August
- Revitalise your trees and veggie beds with organic inputs like compost, poultry-waste fertiliser, Seamungus and worm tea.
- Plant fruit trees for the coming summer 🍏🥑🍊🫐
- Sow a green manure crop that you will harvest in mid-spring when it's time to sow summer seedlings.

Winter is also a great time to consider the next growing season with the successes and failures of last season still in mind. It may be simple problems such as mulch continually spilling onto pathways and improved edging is required. Perhaps the yard was too hot in summer and shade trees and sprinklers are needed to cool it down 😎
Or is it a bigger issue and you are dreaming of creating your ideal landscape?

For garden recommendations, quotes, further advice, or help with any of the above tasks you can DM or call me✌️

Greetings (Annyeonghaseyo, Konnichiwa) to greater Launceston! I have returned from traveling to South Korea and Japan where I visited at least 14 gardens and 10 Temples across 21 days. Now home, I am processing the many photos and souvenirs collected on my incredible journey. Be prepared for photo spam in the next few weeks!

As for Wholesome Horticulture news, I taking on new clients and soon new employees. Feel free to contact through the page for enquiries on either.

For now I leave you with one of my favourite shots from the Shinjuku Gyoen national garden, Tokyo... A splendidly, sunlit Pinus densiflora.

Here I am doing a 'there it is' in front of a remarkable 750 year old Juniperus chinensis - Chinese juniper. Located at the secret garden inside the UNESCO world heritage listed Changdeokgung palace (secondary palace for the kings of the Joseon dynasty), this incredible specimen stands at 12m in height with a maximum trunk width of 5.9m.
Throughout history and still to this day, Juniper wood is prized for its aromatics and is used as incense in rituals to ward off evil spirits.

Perhaps it works on itself, as this tree has survived two Japanese occupations of Korea (1592-1598, 1910-1945), whilst most of the surrounding palaces and temples were burned to the ground.

namuyeo yeong-wonhala, gamsahabnida 🙏

Long live the tree🌲 Thank you ✌️

Happy Monday :D
There is nothing like fresh cards to make you feel like you're growing in the right direction. These cards were printed by Seedsticks on 100% recycled paper. They have a natural matt finish and feature Chamomile seeds! So if you are done with the card, you may plant it and watch flowers grow 😊🌱

I am happy to recommend Seedsticks for your printing needs. They were great to work with and delivered my product promptly.

As always, DM or email me with all your gardening and landscaping enquiries!

- Simon.
