Just contemplating the idea of building or renovating, especially if the aim is to create your "forever" home, can feel overwhelming and knowing how to get the ball rolling can be the hardest step!
I asked Adrian to offer some advice - he can actually be surprisingly wise!😜😜 Working as a building designer for the past 25+ years means he has seen it all and has some thoughts on how to ensure a successful collaboration between designer and client, and, most importantly, a successful end result!
1. Be honest with your designer! We aren’t here to judge what you can or can’t afford. It is much better to be honest with us from the start so you don’t end up in a position where you’ve had plans, engineering etc prepared but cannot afford to build. We can guide you and keep things on the right financial track from the start!
2. Think about what IS, but also what ISN'T working from your current property and the reasons behind that. Consider how you use/would like to use the rooms and spaces in your home; the type of lifestyle your family has, and how you could make day to day life easier, more comfortable and more enjoyable.
3. Identify what you need to achieve or what you need NOW but make sure you also think longer-term: what might your family and lifestyle look like in 5-10 years from now? This allows us to consider future staging opportunities upfront and create a home that is adaptable, flexible and future-focused.
4. Provide us with any sketches (no matter how bad!), photos, or inspiration that you have. Everything upfront, from the start will ensure we are all on the same page from day one and end up in the same spot at the end.
5. Be clear (and realistic) on the "boring basics"...your goals, needs, budget, site restrictions etc. Get these things nailed down at the beginning and the process will be smoother and more fun!
