Anyone for a cuppa?

The wild weather has caused a bit of havoc around the place, but the coffee has ripened beautifully and is now being harvested. Both red and yellow beans have done brilliantly!

Seedlings of these both should be available for anyone interested soon. These plants are about 2.5 years old and 2 metres tall, growing outside but protected over Winter. And now, with the cooler weather in the middle of January, (seriously, what the heck, Sunbury?) a well earned home roasted cup of coffee beckons.

Anyone for coffee?? Cherries ripening beautifully at the moment, a couple more weeks of warmer weather and we'll be roasting the beans. (We've got both red and gold coffee varieties right here in Sunbury).

It's almost berry season, and we're full of excitement with the first of the golden raspberries! (Ever tried keeping a toddler out if a berry patch? Good luck!)

We started harvesting some tomatoes today! These sprung up in some compost we had put in around a jackfruit and grew so well, we left the plant there. Both jackfruit and tomato did well and viola!

Meanwhile, we're pretty stoked with how some other tropicals and subtropical are going. Flowering abundant around here at the moment with lychee, mangoes, wampee and even grumichama all out in bloom. Add in the mulberries, coffee, cherries, apricots, apples, berries, currants and citrus all setting fruit again (including finger limes!), it looks like a productive few months ahead.

Pineapple pup update: the cold weather set root formation back a little, but they should be right to go either this weekend or next, pending how long we get the warmer weather for. Stay tuned!

Never in a gazillion years would I have thought we'd be harvesting pineapple in Winter in Victoria, but these last few years have been... odd.

These are a red pineapple variety that tend to be a little more fibrous than the commercial yellows (and more spiky!) They're great for cooking, (pineapple fritters are 👌) and fresh but a little chewier than the supermarket variety. But the trade off is you CAN grow them to fruiting stage!

The other added bonus is the red throw many more pups than the yellows.

This one plant has thrown 12-15 which should be right to go in a couple of weeks. Send us a message if you're interested!

Now is the perfect time to start capsicum seedlings if you have somewhere under cover that can protect them through the last bit of Winter (a bathroom or laundry is good). That way, you have a kick start when the weather has warmed with decent sized plants ready to flower, in order to extend your growing season.

Fun fact: did you know that capsicums come in both male and female fruit? They're easily identifiable by the number of segments - females have four and are sweeter, thus better for salads and fresh. Males have three and have a little more bite, thus better for stir fry and cooking. Use this knowledge to pick the most suitable capsicums for your dishes. (The pictured one is female - you can see the four segments).

Ah, how good are white sapotes?!

If you've never tried them, they taste like a creamy custard, with hints of peach, pear, lemon, banana, caramel and vanilla. They're chock full of B vitamins, and the fruit is known to lessen and treat rheumatic and arthritic pain, as well as cramps, anxiety and insomnia (they have a great calming effect on the body and actually act as a mild sedative or narcotic).

Best of all, the trees are SO EASY to grow; if you can grow a lemon tree, you can grow white sapote. Just remember to prune your branches, the trees start bearing after year 2 or 3 and are so laden with fruit often the branches can snap.

Plants should be available soon - a highly recommended fruit tree.

Coffee flowers in abundance!

We have a few different varieties of coffee growing - this one is a dwarf variety called Catuai. It's a Brazilian variety perfect for growing in pots.
