Jacaranda Blue
The cosy, white cottage “Jacaranda Blue” with the blue door and stained-glass windows is inspired by the blue rain showered by the Jacaranda trees in Spring from my parents’ property.
Country family, animal lovers, chocolate addicts, reading euthenist and dreamers, our cottage “Jacaranda Blue” is a time capsule of our journey, as well as the journey of other peoples unfinished treasures.
“Jacaranda Blue” represents wisdom, rebirth, wealth, and good luck. Legend says if the flower falls on your head, it means good fortune for you.
“Jacaranda Blue” is our one-of-a-kind cottage that has been made from materials sourced from Estate sales, salvage yards, antique shops, marketplace, flea markets, friends, and family.
Cosy, comfortable, vintage, and pretty! Mix old with new.
The front door had been stored away in these lovely peoples shed, they bought it as a young couple at a flea market and it became a treasured piece. It stayed with them throughout their life – getting married, having children and then grandchildren, they absolutely loved this door and had plans for it, but they never found the time to renovate it. We painted the door in jacaranda blue colourings. We love the coloured glass in this door giving the cottage a cosy, homely feel.
The pink stained-glass windows were also sourced from the same people as the door, they took us to their outside shed and showed us all their windows they had collected over the years. We were very happy that we could give a new life to these beautiful windows.
The exposed beams on the ceiling are cypress and came from an estate sale, they were sitting in the yard covered in brown paint and full of nails. When we sanded them back, they had such a beautiful smell.
The kitchen cabinet came from an older couple who had kept the hutch for many years and again never found the time to repurpose it. The hutch came joined together as one unit, but we separated them as they had been originally. We put hand painted handles on the cabinets.
“Jacaranda Blue” interior design style embraces a worn, lived-in look. There is something comforting yet beautifully curated. Throw in soft colours, a mix of vintage and new deco, and a picture begins to emerge.
It makes sense to us to source an alternative look, filled with history-rich pieces that showcased chipping paint, as well as vintage finds boasting feminine style.
The mirror in the bathroom came from a beautiful old lady, who we went to pick up some old windows from and in the back of her garage I saw this old mirror. I asked her if she was selling the mirror and she said, “that old mirror, I am taking it to the dump. I actually stood in front of this mirror on my wedding day 57 years ago”. She was very happy that I wanted to use it again.
The decoupage ceiling in the bathroom, the entry to the bathroom and in the kitchen came from the novel “Gone with the wind”. I had found this book in my grandmothers’ things, the spine of the book was ruined, and I wasn’t sure what to do with it, as I didn’t want to throw it away. This book was written in 1940 and was given as a birthday present to someone named Erica. I was saddened that I couldn’t ask my grandmother who this person was. The decoupage has a sealant on the top of it. The kids and I loved reading the book as we put the pages up on the ceilings.
