How to get fresh air when pollution is stopping me from opening my windows

The ‘Surfers Paradise Tall Stories - Loud in the City’ series asks why city life is so loud and how we can change it. This is the fifth article in the series looking at how ubiquitous fossil-fuel driven equipment has become in high-density high rise cities, and why it needn’t be so for much longer. By unraveling the complex tangle of noise in this small city of tall buildings, and finding out what could be done differently, perhaps we can find ways for residents of high density living everywhere to get fresh air and a better night’s sleep....

This article is part of the Surfers Paradise series ‘Tall Stories - Loud in the City’. The noise we humans make is incredible. The street orchestra of garbage-wrangling ranks high as a repeat offender. By unraveling the complex tangle of noise in this small city of tall buildings, and finding out what could be done differently, perhaps we can find ways for residents of high density living everywhere to get fresh air and a better night’s sleep.

Noise pollution from garbage collection disrupts daily life in Surfers Paradise, preventing residents from enjoying their environments. The article critiques the massive waste management systems th…

Is it just me, or are other people bothered by the incredible noise we humans make? After the long weekend just gone, this is the first of my Loud in the City series of articles that ask why city life is so noisy and what we can do differently.

Surfers Paradise is vibrant yet noisy. While the atmosphere attracts fun-seekers, the cult of the internal combustion engine is unnecessarily dominant in an area so walkable and appealing for resid…

Up and down the Coast some mature trees that were partially uprooted in cyclonic winds remained connected with the soil. I’m no arborist, but could they remain viable if instead of wholesale removal, they were braced or propped? These methods of caring for trees are common practice in Asian and European cities. Even large and old trees are supported in this way and they add beauty and character to streetscapes. Why not here?

Trees are fast-disappearing from Gold Coast streets and parks, leaving gaps in arbours of natives and avenues of Norfolks. In the wake of Tropical Cyclone Alfred clean-up crews have been efficientl…

Subtropical design, because climate affects everything

Fascinating insights from Dr Rosemary Kennedy today at Home of the Arts.

Subtropical design isn't just about aesthetics - it's about creating a resilient city that works with our climate, not against it. When we put climate first in urban planning, we get spaces that naturally stay cooler, use less energy, and bring people together.

Smart design = a more liveable future 🌿
