It was great to get recognition for our contribution with the Gallipoli Club to AMP’s Quay Quarter precinct at Circular Quay. With Ed still overseas, Jansen and Zaahir did the honours last Friday night at the Australian Museum and received the award certificate from Lord Mayor Clover Moore. With the National Awards a few weeks away, we’ll see what further recognition is in store for this remarkable collaboration of six design practices and artist

Ed’s Brickworks/Glengery talks in the USA took him firstly to New York’s 5th Av. Garment district - where he lived in ‘79 when he took up an apprenticeship in Marcel Breuer’s Madison Av. office. He visited Grand Central, describing it as “the greatest public room in the city” backing onto the recently refurbished Gropius Pan Am (now MetLife) building complete with Albers’ lobby artwork. From there to Philadelphia where the second talk in Brickworks’ Walnut Street showroom is a stone throw from Louis Kahn’s top floor office building, now a historic treasure.

As Sydney’s population now hits 5 million, there’s a growing consciousness in the development industry and now the public domain that our city has reached critical mass. There has never been such massive investment in infrastructure in Sydney nor boom in residential construction as is currently under way. Our lifestyle and demography is changing in a way that is now challenging our urban environment.

Ed’s new book on the subject is nearing completion and expected to be published later this year. It will include a description of Sydney’s history and global geo-political context, local geography, infrastructure, urban design and, of course, architecture. More on this later in the year.

By contrast, California was mild if wet and the Apple Campus at Cupertino, by Foster Partners with Apple was an equally gob-smacking masterpiece, although on a grand scale for another century. 12,000 employees are moving onto the spaceship corporate headquarters and across the road the visitor centre was opened to the public. This is the model with virtual reality imaging off an i-pad.
