Callan Park Waterfront Green Amenities Building.

We are more than pleased to have won an AIA NSW Chapter Award for our amenities building within the rejuvenated Waterfront Green precinct of Callan Park. We are fortunate to work with Greater Sydney Parklands whose team is dedicated to supporting the production of quality architecture.

We are grateful to the client, consultant and construction teams that allowed the delivery of this special parkland building on such a significant site. We would like also thank the Small Projects Jury for their dedicated work during the awards process.

Callan Park Waterfront Green Amenities Building.
Wangal Country / Callan Park
Lilyfield NSW.

Our client required the design and delivery of a high standard amenities building within the rejuvenated Waterfront Green precinct of Callan Park.

Given the high heritage and cultural significance of the Park, the proposed building was located within the footprint of a previous building. We sought to create a welcoming, safe and light filled building that respected and responded to both the open parkland in front and the Casuarina grove behind that held cultural significance to the First Nations people. Its materiality and form is a direct response to its context.

We are grateful to the client, consultant and construction teams that allowed the delivery of this special parkland building on such a significant site.

I think the Säynätsalo Town Hall is my favourite Aalto project to date. It is truely masterful in its ability to be both Civic and human in scale. The complex again relies on a raised central courtyard surrounded by a low scaled loggia. The civic face of the building projects strength and resilience certainly qualities the Finn’s are proud of.

The Experimental House is located on the Island of Muuratsalo and was Aalto and Elissa’s beloved summer house. It is located in an extraordinarily beautiful part of the island. These days you arrive at the rear of the modest complex but originally always by boat via a timber dock set between large rocks. The front facade reads as a ruin with the scale altered as soon as you turn and address the courtyard. It and the interiors are very modest but unsurprisingly spatially successful. Only accessible via the Aalto Foundation.

There are a number of Aalto projects in close proximity. The College of Education (UI University) just across the road from the Aalto Museum is a collection of buildings adhering to his campus masterplan started in the early 50’s until the 70’s. A masterful scheme that respects the individual existing imposing 19th century masonry buildings and links the campus to the town centre and the adjacent forest. Again conceptually inspired by Italian hill towns with the sports field as piazza at the highest point. Such a treat to wander the campus and through and over the buildings.
