Celebrating the 2026 Australian Interior Design Awards, with DUO Architects shortlisted alongside some of the country’s most prestigious design practices.

This year’s awards recognised work that challenges convention through material depth, spatial clarity, and storytelling across residential, retail & hospitality, workplace, and public realms. A strong snapshot of where Australian design is heading.

Big thanks to our clients LEICHT Kitchens Australia for the trust and collaboration on the LEICHT Australia HQ Retail Project, it’s always a privilege translating brand identity into built form.

We are incredibly grateful to share that our project The Esplanade; A place to pause has been shortlisted in the 2026 Houses Awards - Apartment or Unit category.

Set within a 1930's Art Deco apartment building adjacent the Manly foreshore, the project was designed as a calm and adaptable home shaped by restraint, continuity and quiet functionality. The renovation focused on creating a stronger connection between light, materiality and everyday living while carefully retaining the character of the original apartment.

This project is especially meaningful to us as it is also Kirrili's own home, a deeply personal exploration of how we want to live, and an opportunity to test ideas around simplicity, flexibility and timelessness within a compact footprint.

Thank you to the project team for your dedication and attention to detail throughout.

We feel genuinely honoured to have the project recognised alongside so many thoughtful and inspiring works from practices we admire greatly. Good luck to all of the shortlisted practices, we will see you all in Melbourne for the awards night!

We believe that constraints breed creativity.

A recessed bar where a linen cupboard once stood, echos the social rituals of the 1930s Art Deco cocktail bar.

By transforming the storage zone into a functional feature, we were able to retain the structure of the Art Deco building & enhance it's charming character.

This design strategy significantly reduced construction costs & allowed high quality finishes & fittings to take priority.

Project Highlight: The Gunners House - Fairlight.

A contemporary addition shaped by constraint. A reimagined semi-detached home where a long “gun-barrel” corridor draws light and views deep into the plan, connecting seamlessly to a landscaped courtyard beyond.

Volume is introduced through a skillion roof and high-level glazing, while a retractable glass façade dissolves the boundary between inside and out.

Developed through iterative studio testing, including hand-crafted balsa models exploring the renovation and spatial sequence.

Precise, restrained, and grounded in material honesty.

We can’t wait to see the Gunners House come to life onsite in 2026!

Site resides on Gayamagal land, Eora Country.
