An accessible shower is important to get right. The shower seat in particular will mitigate fatigue and possible slips, trips and falls. As shown below, this shower seat is higher than a traditional seat being 460-480mm above FFL for ease of use for wheelchair users and people with ambulant impairment.
The shower seat shown is longer for wheelchair users. A smaller one can be used for the elderly. The seat is located close to a horizontal handrail and vertical handrail where the moveable shower rose is positioned. An area of 1400mm x 1600mm is needed adjacent the seat to allow for transfer between mobility device and shower seat.

Older Adults Want to Age-in-Place, But Many Don't Expect They'll Be Able to.

In the US, the AARP's latest "Home and Community Preferences Survey" reveals that while a majority of older adults (75%) want to stay in their homes and communities, many (44%) feel they will eventually need to move due to high housing costs and communities not being set up for ageing adults. This is a growing concern as the U.S. population ages.
Key findings from the survey include:
1. Community Satisfaction: While 64% of adults are currently happy with their community resources, 50% don't think these will meet their needs as they age.
2. Cost of Living: The main reason older adults consider moving is to find a community with a lower cost of living.
3. Social Connections: There is an increasing desire for social connection opportunities in communities.
4. Housing Costs: The cost of maintaining a house is a major concern, with many citing rent or mortgage expenses as key issues.
5. Housing Preferences: Most older adults prefer single-family homes over communities designed for 50-plus adults.
6. Home Modifications: Many older adults plan to modify their homes to make them more accessible as they age.
7. Technology: New or improved technology is part of the plan for aging in place, including medical emergency response systems and smart home devices.
8. Caregiver Support: Caregivers prioritize accessible and quality health care and community services.
The survey highlights the need for expanding affordable housing and making communities more livable for all.

A study from Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public Health highlights the need for better integration of health, social services, and community-based support systems to help the elderly age in place. By 2034, the number of people aged 65 and older will surpass those under 18, creating unprecedented demand for long-term care services.

Key points from the study include:

- Ageing in place is a primary goal for most older adults, but without a national long-term care insurance system, many services are either expensive or provided by unpaid family members.
- Current long-term care services are often inadequate, with significant inequities based on financial resources, geography, and family structure.
- Two main barriers to aging in place are the lack of affordable services and insufficient labor to meet demand.
- Although there has been a shift from institutional to home-based care, the infrastructure remains fragmented and underfunded.
- The healthcare workforce faces recruitment and retention challenges, and while technology can help, it is not evenly available, especially in rural areas, and raises privacy concerns.
- Home-based care is often too expensive for many retirees, exacerbating the issue.
The study calls for significant changes to ensure older Americans can age with dignity, independence, and a high quality of life.

Prioritize Safety at Home!

Did you know that installing grabrails near toilets, showers, and bathtubs can significantly reduce the risk of falls? These strategically placed supports offer stability and peace of mind, especially for seniors and those with mobility challenges. Its imperative that all elderly people who are ageing in place need grarails to make their homes safer and more accessible, especially in the bathroom.

Why Grabrails?

Enhanced Stability: Provides support when standing up or sitting down.
Fall Prevention: Reduces the risk of slips and falls in wet areas.
Peace of Mind: Offers confidence and independence to those with mobility issues.

An accessible pan is different to an ambulant pan. An accessible pan is purpose built for people in wheelchairs.

The height of pan is 460-480mm to allow for better transfer from wheelchair seat to pan and back. The pan has an 800mm projection from rear wall, which allows for functional transfer using a slide board from wheelchair to pan when a wheelchair user pulls up alongside the length of the pan.

The centreline of pan to side wall is 450mm, which allows for sufficient space for a commode wheelchair. As can be seen from the image below, the grabrail (horizontal extension) is much longer than an ambulant pan grabrail due to the variety of transfer methods that can be employed by a wheelcair user.

Some people can approach from the front of the pan, some people on an angle to the pan and some people at the side of the pan. Some people need to use a slide board and others can support their weight by standing up from the wheelchair and using the handrail to support and manouver to the pan.

Finally a small backrest can be installed between back of toilet seat and cistern. This backrest provides assistance for those people with low core strength.

The Future of Aging: Smart Home Technology for Seniors

By 2030, 1 in 6 people in the world will be aged 60 years or over, and the number continues to grow. As their physical condition will not be at its prime, many will need a support system. Other than caregivers, family members, and elderly homes, there is a growing interest in smart home technology.

The concept of a smart home is no stranger to the public nowadays. In fact, if you are using smart bulbs or smart thermostats, you’re already part of the community. While in a normal smart home, people may look for efficiency and convenience, the priority in a smart home for older adults will lean towards enhancing independence, safety, and comfort, allowing the elderly to age with ease.

Although senior citizens may not be as tech-savvy as the younger generation, smart home technology brings genuine benefits in increasing their autonomy and independence, empowering them to grow old in a safer and comfortable environment.

An ambulant toilet pan and surrounding hardware is critical for seniors as they age in place. Many falls and subsequent injuries occur in the bathroom so you need to get this right.

The 480mm high pan is higher than a standard pan and provides greater functionality for people to get on and off the pan. The centreline of the pan is set at 450mm from side wall, which allows easy reach to grabrails, whilst providing sufficent space for commodes. This pan is called an ambulant pan and most suppliers stock them.
L shaped rabrails are set on both sides of the pan at a height of 800mm, which allows for better leverage. The L shape is important becuase the vertical handrail allows people to pull themselves off the pan and the horizontal section allows people to lower themselves onto the pan.
The toilet roll holder is located in front of the pan to allow easy reach. The toilet roll holder should not be located too far away from the pan due to potential over balance issues. Checkout more information at www.ageplace.com.au

Making Bathroom Modifications for Elderly Parents Doesn't Have to Be Expensive!

Caring for our elderly parents is a top priority, and ensuring their safety and comfort at home is crucial. But did you know that bathroom modifications don't have to break the bank?

Here are some affordable and effective changes you can make:

Grab Bars: Installing grab bars near the toilet and in the shower can provide extra support and prevent falls.
Non-Slip Mats: Place non-slip mats in the shower and on the bathroom floor to reduce the risk of slipping.
Raised Toilet Seats: A raised toilet seat can make it easier for seniors to sit and stand without straining.
Handheld Showerheads: These are easier to use and can make showering more comfortable.
Shower Chairs: A sturdy shower chair can provide a safe place to sit while bathing.
Small changes can make a big difference in creating a safer and more accessible bathroom for our loved ones.

The federal government’s aged care reforms will have a significant impact on the ability of older adults to age in place, which means staying in their own homes as they grow older rather than moving to a nursing home or other care facility. Here are some key ways these reforms will affect aging in place:

More Money for Home Care: The government gives more money to help pay for services that come to your home, like nurses or helpers.

Better Quality Care: They make sure the people who come to help are well-trained and do a good job.

Help for Family Caregivers: They provide support for family members who take care of their older relatives, like training and breaks.

New Technology: They invest in things like video doctor visits and devices that can monitor health from home.

Easier Access to Information: They make it easier to find out what help is available and how to get it.

Simpler Rules: They change the rules to make it easier to get home care services.

Creating a supportive ecosystem around an elderly person is essential for their well-being and quality of life.

Home Handyman - A safe and accessible home is the foundation, with modifications like grab bars, ramps, and non-slip mats to prevent falls. A comfortable living space that is well-lit and temperature-controlled can significantly enhance their comfort and safety.

Alled Health - Regular medical check-ups and proper medication management are crucial for maintaining health, along with encouraging gentle physical activities like walking, yoga, or tai chi to preserve mobility.

Carer - Regular visits and calls from family and friends can help combat loneliness and provide much-needed emotional support. Engaging in community centers, clubs, or senior groups can foster social connections and a sense of belonging. Access to counseling or support groups can address any emotional or psychological needs.

Technology - For many, technology can greatly enhance the quality of life for the elderly. Assistive devices like hearing aids and mobility aids can improve daily living, while teaching basic technology skills can help them stay connected with loved ones and access online resources.
